        Hi, everyone!

So I have a young female lionhead bunny. She’s really sweet, and I love her but I’m having problems with her pooping literally EVERYWHERE in her cage. She’s not my first rabbit, and her cage is actually really big…I think that’s the problem, she has too muh space but I don’t have anything smaller to put her in. It’s just super frustrating because in literally one day she has her entire cage filled up with poop and it’s disgusting. She uses her litterbox, but still goes everywhere else. Does anyone have tips to make her stop and how to clean up the poop?

No ” cage ” is ever to big. Mine have the run of the entire  main floor and live in an x pen when I’m out.

Perhaps it is her age ? Is she spayed ?

I’ve heard that too much space can overwhelm them before they’re litter box trained.

No, but I had a spayed rabbit before and she did the same thing, so I doubt that’s it…

              Litterbox too small maybe?
My huge megabunny has a litterbox the size a cat would have and ‘could’ “fill it up” with poops in maybe 2 or 3 days…. only one layer of poops though !
So for your young lionhead to fill it up in one day…. golly !!!! I don’t quite understand that.
Can you round up the stray poops and put them back in the litterbow so she understands thats where to go.
maybe she would like the litterbox in another place, or at another angle.
“if you can’t take the mountain to mohammed….” Which means if your bunny chooses to poop somewhere other than the litter tray, mvoe the litter tray to that place !
              Good luck !

Spaying, if she isn’t already would be the first step. Plus girl bunnies are prone to cancer if not spayed, so it’s a good idea for health firstly..and then you also get the benefit of better potty habits. As my vet says..any behavioral issues he doesn’t care about…but we better do right for her health since that is his concern.

How is your box set up? Willow is very specific about her set up. The box has to be large enough to easily fit her whole body in. She wants a thin layer of wood pellets and then hay over that.

She is 100% as long as it’s set up like that. Any deviation and she will potty elsewhere. She does not like a hay bin outside the box..the hay needs to be in the box. She does not like her pellets or water any where near it.

Not to say this is exactly what your bunny wants, but my point would be that each bunny is an individual and may have certain requirements about his potty place. You may have to do some trial and error till you get his approval. Try different boxes, both style and size, different litters, try moving it to different locations.

Our bunny is mostly free roam and then penned at night. While potty training her we had her limited to the kitchen. With having the whole house she has a box in her pen, one in our bedroom and one in the bathroom. She uses the one in the bathroom most. She seems to think bathroom time is a group activity.

                Good luck!

I’m in the same boat.  Both rabbits are neutered but they poop everywhere.  70% of it goes into the litter box(es) but there is so much that does not.  Both bunnies love to poop right in front of the fridge.  So we put a litter box there.  Nope.  Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.  Most times they don’t.  I have told the wife that I hope when I die I don’t have my life flash in front of my eyes because the past year has had hours of just picking up poop.

3 of my bunnies are excellent at using their litter boxes. The 4th – she uses the box, AND poops everywhere else. Primarily along boundaries. I don’t think I see an end to it… I just pick up the poops every day and tell her how cute she is.

My first rabbit had perfect litter habits, even pre-neuter.

My current (neutered) trio are much the same as your lionhead. We haven’t really got a perfect solution. At the moment we have an underbed storage box as their litter box.

                      This sort:

Though ours is possibly a little taller.

We’ve tried a corner litter box with two hay racks – but they wet through it multiple times a day.

We’ve tried the above box filled deeply and emptied every few days (Mr Roger got angry if we changed his box too often, so we wondered if it might be the same for our trio) – but they wouldn’t soil it and everywhere around it. Anything soft – peed on. Cardboard – peed on. Just because they fancy it – peed on.

Our newest endeavor is a thin layer of litter in their large box, with fresh hay provided frequently to entice them in (also our solution to our cage banging problem) combined with a handheld hoover to make multiple quick pick ups of poo each day. They seem to be pooing outside of their box less and haven’t weed outside of it yet.

All bunnies are different, most of the time bunnies will pee in their litter box but poop everywhere else. It’s instinctual for bunnies to poop while eating, so maybe put their hay by their litter areas so its not everywhere and at least in a smaller area.

One thing that might be worth checking is whether she starts with the litter tray and then moves on. My boys are by no means perfect but have a strong tendency to move away from the litter tray if the corner they like to use isn’t as clean as they want (and this tray is massive)
