We lost our Monty (Mini Lop) to unknown circumstances over one year ago and since then we have tried three rescue rabbits from a shelter. First one just hid under the coffee table no matter how many treats we tried to entice it out with. Was fine with the kids but not really interested and the Third she was almost perfect and interacted with the kids almost like Monty did but after a month of living with us almost had a heart attack when the dog walked past so for her sanity I took her back.

My husband suggested that we start with a baby like we did with Monty so it grows up with everything that goes on in our house. Yesterday we purchased a an Iron grey kit (mini Lop) we can pick up at the end of Feb.

I’ve always wanted to have a bonded pair and tried with Monty a few times with rescues but we never found a match for him. But I’d love to have a pair now, would I be able to get another kit and put them together now and would there be a possibility of them staying bonded after they have been spay/neutered?

You can get two kits, but you’d have to separate them at about 12 weeks if they are boy and girl, a bit later if they are the same sex. Boy and girl can get babies, same sex bunnies esp male bunnies, will get into fights when they become sexually mature. You should never let them “fight it out” – they can hurt each other severely and they can bear a grudge if they have gotten into serious fighting.
After you separate them, (it’s best to let them live in the same room so they can see and hear and smell each other) you have them de-sexed at the appropriate age (for boys as soon as the testicles drop, for girls around 6 months). You let them heal for a month, allowing time for the hormones to die down completely. Then you start rebonding and that’s often successful if they had a good relationship before they were separated.

Another option would be to raise the little one you’ve bought, have him/her desexed, and then try to find a friend for your bun, preferably by doing bunny speed-dating at a shelter. If the buns can choose their partner themselves, bonding will be much easier. Us humans can have no idea what attracts two bunnies to each other, it probably has to do with body scent and body language, i e subtle things that we can’t perceive.

Baby bunnies are like a box of chocolates.

Truthfully, I don’t think there is any greater chance of having a lifelong bond by getting two babies and raising them together than you would by pairing two adults together. Babies love everybody. They will get along just fine and seem to be the best of friends. When they hit sexual maturity, their true personalities will begin to develop (and may not develop fully until they are officially adults). They may fit due to hormones, which you definitely don’t want to happen because it can ruin any chances of rebonding them once they are desexed. But even if you have them spayed/neutered asap and there had been no fighting up to that point, their personalities may not mesh well and they might not get along for that reason.

I’m not saying don’t get two babies. There are many people who have done this and everything turned out just fine in the end. I’m just saying that it isn’t a guarantee of a lifelong bond.

The nice thing about waiting until your bunny is an adult is that you can pick out another adult rabbit that has a complimenting personality. As Bam said, you can take your bunny to a shelter to meet other bunnies.

Most rabbit owners cant stop at one (theyre too adorable ), i think you’ll end getting two whether its now or later.
I’ve had experience from raising two kits together and also bringing a baby bunny to a home with an existing adult bun. From my experience i find its slightly easier to raise two kits alongside eachother (bare in mind you should split them up before neutering/spaying, but house them within the same area so they can get used to eachothers smell), this is simply because sometimes when you have a single rabbit on its own for a while, they can be very terriotrial or hostile to any new ones you introduce later on.

I agree with Peri and Poe.
