I got a baby Holland Lop rabbit last week from a pet store. I have been giving him lots of hay and some romaine lettuce. Today I noticed he had diarrhea. I immediately called the vet. He said it’s probably from giving him so much fresh veggies and to keep an eye on him. I’m really worried because I don’t want him to dehydrate. Also, I know it’s probably from the upset tummy, but his genital area looks like a round ball outside of his body. It’s not red or anything, it just looks weird. Before it looked like there were little ‘pockets’ on either side of his anus but now it’s stretched out. Please help, I’m really worried about my baby, Doc!

He needs to go to the vet.

True diarrhea is very dangerous, especially for young bunnies. A little romaine lettuce isn’t going to cause diarrhea. I agree with Jerseygirl, get him a vet. If the first vet you contacted isn’t familiar with bunnies, then try another.

Agree, your bun needs vet care.

Your vet may have thought this was just sticky poop/poopy butt. Poopy butt is cured with hay and water. The bunny doesn’t seem sick, it will still eat and play and seem ok.

But if this is true diarrhea, it’s much more serious. True diarrhea is liquid, often with mucus in it, there’s no solid poop at all (no round poop). Sometimes diarrhea in a very young bun is caused by a parasite (coccidia). Sometimes it’s bad bacterial overgrowth that are causing it. Keep him warm until you get to the vet.

What you describe about his genitals sounds like rectal prolapse, a bit of the rectal tissue that’s bulging out. It can be tucked in by a vet.

Rabbits from petstores are often not in good health, which is very sad, on the other hand, this is a bun that really needs you.

Bam, I thought rectal prolapse too. But without a picture, I wasn’t sure what the OP was referring to exactly.

Yes animal lover, LBJ is of course right, without a pic it’s very difficult to say anything at all about the swelling. But a vet will of course know. We’d be very happy for updates!
