Hi, my name is Aldo, I am from México, currently living with my girlfriend in San Jose del Cabo, BCS. I am trying to find guidance about rabbit health care, we have a two year rabbit which we are looking forward to spay, but it has been really hard because there seems to be no rabbit health culture in México, exotic vets are rare, in fact we haven’t found one that we feel safe to get a regular consult.

Currently, we came to Tijuana to do some earrings, and since this city is much bigger, we found many doctors that claim to do the spaying, after some investigation we found out only about 1 person that had spayed her bunny, and the poor little friend didn’t make it after the operation.

We are really afraid of losing our Rabbit, last week my girlfriend found a old vet who has a veterinary clinic and says he does the spaying on regular basis, one thing got my attention though, he said that doesn’t need to suture the operation.

Believe me, we have seen a lot of videos, guides, etc. But since we don’t have many choices, and we need to go back to San Jose very soon, I am looking on forums for someone who could, stay in touch and give us guidance for what to do, spay with this person, or wait until we somehow manage to find a better one (for which I believe we would need to save money and do a long road trip, since we can’t travel with rabbits on airplanes here in México).

Thanks in advance for any assitance.

We have a vet finding resource page, which I’ll post below. But my vet travels to Mexico and does volunteer work with the animal shelters there. So that got me thinking-why don’t you phone the animal shelters anywhere near you and see 1. If there is a vet available to do the spay OR 2. if a vet ever travels there from Canada/US who you could maybe hook up with to do the spay?

If your not confident in the vets you’ve found I’d say put it off. Keep looking, call around -things change you may move or a new vet may move into an area near you.

Maybe call the vet that you were thinking of, the one who doesn’t suture=he must close it up somehow-perhaps he uses glues or staples. You may even be able to observe a surgery -and that might make you feel better (OR decide against it!)

Ok here are the resources we have on the site-I’m not sure if it will be helpful for your area though -but Good Luck and let us know how you make out finding a vet!
