        Hey Folks.

Just me, proud owner of the rascal named Fox. (also known as the reason we re did the entire living room)

So, I noticed yesterday when I got home, that Fox had been having very small poops. They are still proper shape and everything, but they are tiny, about half to two thirds the normal size.

He still is eating, lots of greens and what not, however, I am unsure if this is something that may need more looking in to – and if so – should I kick in the door to the vet and demand to see the on call vet.

Or – is it one of those things “As long as he is eating, drinking, playing and pooping” not to worry.

Thanks gang. My goal is to one day have enough of these terrible worries that I can calm another bunny owner 😐

I wouldn’t kick the door in at the vets, leave that to me and my friend, so you don’t have to, we do a good job lol

Mordaith, I think that it may be a cause of some stress? Like if you moved Fox’s litterbox to a different area suddenly? If it keeps on going, you might want to call a vet… I think that if he’s acting normal, then it’s fine, just watch him more closely for a couple of days.

Poop getting smaller in size is always an observandum. It can mean that your bun isn’t eating enough hay and/or drinking enough water. Hay is bulky and has lots of indigestible fiber that makes the poop big and round and of a golden-ish color. The guide to bunny poop that Pinky linked to is great.

I don’t think you need an ER vet, but if you don’t see improvement by tomorrow, you can call your regular vet. Small poop can mean a gut slowdown. You can give a little bit of gentle massage. Here is an instructive little video:

If your bun stops eating, won’t take a treat, stops pooping, seems lethargic etc it’s vet time.

Bam, is it like when we don’t eat enough fibre our tummy plays up, a similar thing?

Yes it is Pinky, but it’s much worse for a bun, if they don’t have enough fiber in their tums, their intestines shut down and stop moving altogether. A human can survive on fluids only for a long time, but a bunny can’t. It’s the same with horses. They should eat sth every 6th hour at least (hay).

I just went through this same thing with my Lionhead, Dusty. After doing some research, I cut back on the pellets, which helped increase his hay consumption. I also gave him “wet greens” (all greens rinsed in water and given to him wet), which helped add more water to his diet. He loves pumpkin, so I added that as a treat, as well. It’s great for adding fiber, but still should be looked at as treats. I made sure he had plenty of fresh water. By the next morning, the poops were back to normal! He’s been fine since, but I’m sticking with all of the changes so we don’t run into problems again. Hope this helps…small changes in their diet can make such a difference…they’re such delicate critters!

I spent those days making sure he was eating. He likes to eat as soon as he wakes up, no matter what or when. So I would just jostle him while he was napping and have hay or wet greens waiting for him. He’d chow them down and go back to bed. I kept the litter boxes clean to help keep an eye on things. Everything is back to normal now, he is very happy and all poops seem normal and healthy.

It occurs to me that there were two notable changes in his environment. One we changed his litter. Same brand, different color. He is… strange…
Second, and more likely, in our efforts to finalize the bunny proofing we got rid of our old recliner and got an older chair form my parents. Good quality chair, 20 years old, has seen a lot of pets. So the smell of my parents dog may have been on it – in addition to the sudden removal of ‘That thing he likes to chew on and crawl under’. I suspect these were likely candidates for upset belly.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I would probably loose my mind if it wasn’t for this website.
