My spouse and I are splitting up. As such, I have to move back in with my mother for a while until I can get on my feet enough to afford my own (pet friendly) place. The issue is she has dogs, including a great dane and cats, some of which bring in dead rabbits so I know they find rabbits to be very good prey.

The room she has that I can stay in has a door. I will be putting a latch on either side of it, so when I am in I can latch it and when I leave I can latch it from the outside. The great dane of hers can open any door in the house, she grabs the door knobs in her mouth and turns them with her teeth, hence the latches. The rabbits will have a closet converted into a cage, with a mixture of baby gates and NIC cubes (I’m thinking NIC cube top and the thicker plastic baby gates for the side just for extra security in case a cat slips in or something).

Does anyone have any tips though for safety? Things I should check? Tips for getting them comfortable around the smell of predators?

I’m sorry to hear that Stickerbunny.

Hmm, your bunnies have never been around dogs/cats before? Maybe bring a blanket that smells like dog/cat to set near them before the move. And I think having latches on the door is a good idea, just so you don’t risk someone getting in and terrorizing the buns.

I’m not sure how much exposure they’ve had to cats/dogs. Powder was in the humane society, but he was in the small animal room and his previous home is who knows. Stickers was a pet store bun, purchased by a kid, then rehomed to us. So I don’t think they’ve had much exposure to them, but unsure. I’m hoping it doesn’t freak them out too much. :S But, an 18 hour car ride, change of house, predators all around… I am just hoping they don’t stress out too bad.

I know the dane is gonna have to be put in the bathroom or something while I move the cages in. She is not trained at all, so she’d be trying to knock them out of my hand (she runs and jumps on top of anyone that comes in the house, very bad manners). And all the dogs/cats will have to be kept out of the room, except maybe the chihuahua (she’s blind and deaf and can’t smell, has no teeth left, so she’s not a threat to anything).
