I purchased a rabbit from a local rescue and they told me that it was a male. She said the bunny wasn’t able to bond, and was a “lone ranger”. That was about 2 weeks ago (purchased on christmas). Tonight I came home from work and found “him” nesting, no fur pulling, but he carted off paper, cloth, and random things into a corner of the room and has been growing agressive, growling and lashing out when I go near “him”, even with food. Due to the nesting behavior, I decided to try and see if maybe he is a she… I took photos, but am a complete novice at telling the difference. I saw no testicles, but i know that isn’t a definite answer. I’m fairly certain “he” is actually a “she”.

Please note that I did hands.

Here are links to photos – I cannot get them to show correctly. .

It’s a bit hard to tell in that picture that doesn’t quite look like what I expect for either male or female genitals.

If “he” is actually pregnant, that might explain why they look kind of swollen. Are “his” nipples noticeable? Male nipples should be darn near impossible to find, but if “he” it actually a pregnant female, they would be swelling.

I can’t see the picture. Rabbits in rescues are almost always spayed and neutered. Did this rescue not do that?. Even spayed females can have false pregnancies and make nests. Have you contacted the rescue to make sure the rabbit was spayed or neutered (if you were told so) or did you get paperwork indicating that the surgery was performed?

I’m not sure why the photo won’t post correctly. .. The woman that worked for the rescue said she didn’t know if he was neutered or not. They do a lot of animal fostering and it was a foster woman that I got him from.

I can feel small nipples. I wondered if my bun was actually pregnant, so went my search to find answers while I locate a bun-frirndly vet that’s not 5+ hours away (if possible).

I can se the pic when I copy and paste the link that’s in black, the direct link I can’t make work.

It doesn’t look like a male reproductive thingy to me.

Almost like a little bit of a prolapse. Or vent disease (rabbit syphilis). It doesn’t look quite right, there is swelling.

GOOD LORD!!
Thought I’d have a peak at the harmless photo, taken from a distance as you can’t get near him/her !!
I was NOT expecting a CLOSE up and a VERY clear, in-focus photo!!!!
I’m EATING !!!!
I’m not squeamish in ANY way, but that was a shock !! It should come with a warning !!!! LOL

I’m joking (sort of) – it’s a very good photo to show the problem in hand.

(I have nothing useful, practical or helpful to say, just had to share my shock with you !)

Vienna, sometimes there are pics that are not so appetizing in the Q&A section. People need to ask medical or anatomical questions here and sometimes there might be pics of nasty inflamed or infected sores or parasitic infestations etc so please don’t open this section when you are eating.
I hope this didn’t spoil your dinner altogether :/
The picture-thread in the lounge should be safe to look at even during a meal

Looks like a girl to me. Do things get swollen down there due to “pregnancy” hormones? I don’t know.

EDIT: Oh the joys of Google. Apparently the answer is yes.

Lol sorry about the graphic photos… I should have warned…. Bun does not mind at all being handled so the photo taking was not difficult. …

So a vet is a sure thing since bun’s gender is still difficult to decide, or she’s a female and very swollen, orrr she’s just hormonal/pregnant, which would explain the nesting and random bursts of aggression.

Thank you everyone for the feedback

I looked at the medirabbit link, but please note that I applied slight pressure. I read elsewhere that both male and female gentiles can “pop out” which can aid in confusion.
There is no anal discharge, or vaginal (?) Discharge…

Yes, they both pop out. I was looking at the shape. Look at it from the side. A girl is more “triangular”, like a little pyramid.

                                   Love the terminology bam!

Relentia, did the foster care have other rabbits there?

I would treat this as if she were pregnant. Provide quiet space and materials for her to build nest. Give unlimited, quality pellets and plenty of hay of course. If false, it will resolve soon. If the real deal, babies may arrive shortly as nesting phase is close to birthing. Sometimes a rabbit will do it mid pregnancy but usually its toward end. Hoping for a false alarm for you and your bunny.

I’m not easily put off by medical stuff (did anyone see the exhibition ‘Bodies’ – FASCINATING, if you like that kind of thing !)
I just hadn’t pre-prepared myself !! LOL (and I’ve got a big computer screen!! lol)
