        Hello all!

I currently have been finding cockroaches around my apartment after living there for 5 month. Most were noticed in the bathroom but one was in front of my rabbit, Alfie’s, cage. And another one right outside my room. Alfie stays in my room and his cage is right next to the AC vent. I am EXTREMELY petrified of cockroaches and can barely sleep knowing they have been in my room. Today, the exterminator came and told me they are coming out of the vent because they are attracted to Alfies food and the food in his cage (Alfies cage is on the floor).

Has anyone had this experience and what have they done? I am thinking of buying a table to put his cage on and his food is already sealed in food containers. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I do not want this to escalate to a bigger problem and want to keep Alf safe. Thanks!

Living in a very cold climate, I’ve only seen cockroaches once on holidays so I’m not going to be much help. BUT they are bugs, that don’t blood suck-so I don’t see how it could be an issue for your rabbit. Gross, yes, bothers you, yes, but I don’t think it’s a health issue.

Now if you are a renter-check out your rights and what your landlord has to do to make your space liveable.

Also don’t let the exterminator use chemicals around your bunny-make sure your bunny is out for the entire time you are supposed to be out if there is any spraying (and maybe that sounds ignorant-not having dealt with roaches before-I don’t know but I assume they spray? )

I dont’ know if this helps http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/resources/vector288to301.pdf

IMO your landlord’s reasoning is BS. I would also suggest looking at your rental agreement and seeing if he is liable for getting an exterminator/what he has to do about the problem.

I’ve had many small animals with food that was left out in the open and have had a known roach problem for 11 years where I live and in that time have only ever seen 1 roach in/around the animals. IME they dont tend to be attracted to places where animals live, they are more likely to be near kitchens/crumbs. They’re rather shy animals that seek tight, dark areas and the movement of a rabbit near its food would for sure scare them off, f that makes sense.

Eh, cockroaches aren’t the worst thing in the world. I mean, yeah, the thought of them crawling around is icky. It is possible for them to spread bacteria around, but I don’t think you have too much to worry about. Bunny food is probably not what they’re after anyway. They like dark, warm places. They can eat drywall and wallpaper glue. And like jayne said, they are probably more attracted to the kitchen.
