So I have two neutered male rabbits about 2 years or slightly older (i adopted them as adults). They sort of use their litter box but peeing outside of the cage is still a major problem. They seemed litter trained when we got them but it really varies between using the litterbox every day to suddenly not caring where they pee. They almost always pee in the same places: next to the cage or by the front door. In order to solve this problem i have tried:

        • Making the cage one big litter box (kind of helped)
        • Adding more litter boxes around the house (this helped the peeing next to the cage but i cant put one by the door and they ignore the boxes everywhere else even when i put used litter in it)’
        • Bunny cage arrest for a week or two (tried on more than one occasion)
        • Cleaning the pee spots with vinegar, bleach and ammonia (on different occasions not mixed)
        • keeping the litter boxes clean and adding hay so they have nice places to potty

Im sure I’ve tried more things but just cant think of them. It’s getting to the point where my boyfriend is threatening that the buns never leave the cage or the buns have to go. I don’t want to take away their free roaming time (when we get home to when we go to bed) but i also don’t want my apartment ruined. The urine is getting into the grout around the tiles and changing it to that gross white look. The carpet is getting better but if it starts to stain or cause permanent smells then we could be responsible for damages or lose our deposit. I love my little buns (even though they are kind of grumps) and I dont want to get rid of them.

        Any suggestions???

Hmmmm, that is rough. I am not as rabbit savvy as the other members here (I am fairly new at being a rabbit mommy) but I remember I read somewhere on this forum that even though the bunnies may be trained if they move locations they may need to be retrained as if they were never litter trained to start with. Do you have bedding anywhere else in their cage other than the litterbox? When I was training my bun, she would have accidents outside her box if there was anything soft or anything that resembles bedding outside of her litterbox. I have had her for 2 and a half weeks and she hasn’t had any oopsies. Also, she used to pee outside her xpen too once in a while but what I did was gradually expand her play space. I also watched her closely to see if she was going to pee or not and I would literally follow her around with her play area litter pan. Eventually she started to learn where to go. Now, she has full access to out living room. I also did read that some buns just like to pee on soft things. So maybe get a big piece of linoleum for their play area? Hope it works out for you!

they use to have just a litter box in their cage. I tried tirelessly to keep the whole cage clean except the litter box so they would use just the box but it didnt work. I had to just put litter in the whole bottom of the cage after a while to keep them from getting soaked in pee they have long fur so it would drag in the pee.

It sounds like territorial peeing, judging from where they do it, outside their cage and by the door.

It’s difficult to deal with, since it’s not about not that they aren’t litter-trained, they are marking their property. It’s not super-uncommon when you have two buns, even if they are de-sexed. I’d suggest that you cover the spots they go in with f ex cheap rag-rugs, smallish, they are easily washed and if you exchange them often, the pee won’t have time to penetrate. You can have pieces of a shower-curtain or sth like that under the rag-rugs, just so no pee will soak through to the floor. If you have tiles, you need to put anti-slide under the rugs so you don’t slip and break your necks.

I seriously doubt that cage rest will be effective at all. They are not doing this to be bad, they’re doing it out of instinct.
