        Hi, it’s me again…

Today I was watching my bunny playing and relaxing when I saw her licking the floor where she was sitting.  I realized she had left little mounds of wet poop all over!  It’s not quite like true diarrhea but more like very, very, very wet, smooshy cecals?  She tries to eat them from her bottom as they are coming out only to realize she cannot (or won’t because it’s not good?) so she ends up hopping away and leaving them behind.  They are so soft and wet that they do stick to the floor and when I go to pick them up they are so soft that they end up smearing so I have to wipe them away.  She did try to lick one up but just kind of sat there looking confused.  The odd thing is she leaves perfectly formed regular poops as she happily munches on her hay.  I’ve just noticed the mid morning bouts of melted smooshie cecals/poops for only a couple droppings.  Maybe 4-5…  All of a sudden, she did a perfect string of cecals in front of me and ate them after sniffing them.  What could cause these weird bouts of smooshy wet poos?  She is currently on Tresaderm drops.  Would that have an effect?  Her bottom is clean, she does very well cleaning herself.

        Thanks!

As long as there are plenty of round poop, the non-cecal kind of poop, excessive amounts of cecals are generally considered a dietary issue due to a diet too rich in fat and protein and without enough fiber. Since the Tresaderm is applied topically (on the skin) it shouldn’t have a big impact on the GI bacterial flora. There is a disruption of the gut flora though, that’s what makes the cecals wet and inedible, but this disruption is most often remedied with more fiber (hay) and less pellets. It’s of course a bit trickier with a very young bun like yours, since young growing buns need their nutrients.

If the round poops shrink in size and amount or if she loses her appetite or seems uncomfortable/lethargic, you should contact a vet, young animals are more fragile than adults. If she seems ok except for the sticky poop, you can try and entice her to eat more hay and temporarily cut back a little bit on the pellets, then call your regular vet on Monday just to make sure it’s ok to cut back on the pellets.

Thank you Bam. I will try to get her to eat her hay more… she only picks out the alfalfa…. She is always flopping. Is she just super happy…lazy….? Or do bunnies get lethargic like dogs do? She begs to be let out of her xpen and when I do she sniffs me then just flops down next to me. She is only active in the mornings now and just flops all day long.

Buns that aren’t feeling well don’t flop and certainly not where they can be seen it’s normal for buns to lounge all day. A lethargic bun keeps to herself in a corner or hides somewhere you can’t see it. The bun sits all hunched up or actively presses it’s tummy against the floor. And looks miserable.

Ohhhh okay. Good to know! Thank you! I’m taking her in to see the vet in about 4 more days so I will take a fecal sample with me.

That’s a great thing to do, bring a fecal sample. She’s lucky to have such a vigilant and caring mommy!
