I am about to adopt a rabbit from my friend who is no longer able to keep him for some reasons. My friend told me that it is a 2 years old male rabbit and it have not been spayed.

I’ve done some research online and many websites claims that it is best for a rabbit to be spayed within its first year of birth or else the surgical risks would be quite big after it reaches 1 year old. But they also said that rabbits who have not been spayed would have a very high chance of getting cancerous diseases.

So right now I’m kind of conflicted as to whether I should spay my rabbit since it is already 2 years old. It might be dangerous for it to be spayed but on the other hand there might be health risks if I don’t do so. Can anyone tell me what I should do? I’m not very familiar with all of this since this is my first rabbit, so any reminders or tips on how I should raise my rabbit would be appreciated too!

          Hi!

If the rabbit is male, there’s nothing to worry about-. It’s the female rabbits that have the high risk of uterine cancer if they are left intact. Cancer of the male reproductive organs is very rare in rabbits.

It’s also the girls that need to have the surgery done when they are still young – since a neuter (in boys, it’s called a neuter) is a much less invasive procedure. A male bunny can be neutered at an older age than 2 and still do excellently.

Congratulations to adopting a rabbit! They are really fun and loving pets. The first rule in all rabbit-keeping is to feed lots of hay and offer hay and water 24/7.

You are very welcome to ask any questions you can think of, we’ll be happy to help you become a great bunny-parent =)
