After looking at several posts, and bunny owner pictures, I notice a lot of people make, or set up their own housing space for their buns. Is it better to make up your own rather than store bought housing for indoor bunnies? These following pictures are of my set up and eat buns housing. The male has the larger cage because he decided to binky once and a while in his cage. The female is usually calmer and quieter so she has a smaller one. They are separated due to a bad fight but an working on bonding them once again, and they do get let out a lot for playtime so they aren’t locked up all day.

        Any suggests are appreciated.

Store bought cages tend to be a bit too small The HRS recommended amount of room for a bun that also gets out for a good bit of the day is 2’X4′. I’ve made multiple cages out of NIC cubes, X-Pens, and a combination thereof. What I finally settled on for aesthetic reasons was an X-Pen with linoleum over plywood for flooring, and a hide-y spot/very small extra level made with NIC cubes…I have a ton of flannel in the pen with the bun, and lots of toys and things for her to chew on (plus the NIC hide-y spot has sisal rope woven into it to make a place for her to dig and a chew) The X-Pen also has little twinkly lights strung around the top, and I want to make a small white picket fence with fake daisies wrapped around it to go around the bottom of the cage

It’s almost impossible to find large store bought cages. They just don’t make them very big, and most are inadequate for rabbits. Some people do use large dog crates for their rabbits, since they are bigger than cages sold for small animals. The cages you are using look small to me. As abeautifulhope posted, x-pens or pens made from NIC cubes are a lot better.

You said that you had seen posts here regarding housing, but you may not have seen this page in the Bunny Info link, regarding habitats.

I agree with the cages being too small. The only problem I have is that I am a college student, therefore they travel with me during breaks and I need something that can easily be moved and transported. And something that can keep their urine and poop inside the cages to prevent any smelling on the carpet in my room at college.

Do any of you have pictures of your bunnies housing? I would really like to see them and maybe figure something out for my buns!

I made my bun an NIC condo (wire grids and connectors) that is large enough for him to spend time in but easy to take apart, if I ever need to. The floor is made of coroplast, a corrugated plastic material available in most big hardware depots. It is easy to score into box liners, whether you use NIC grids or not.

If you need something easy to transport, I would take the suggestion of a large dog pen. Many come lined with plastic pans that are easy to clean and protect your floor. http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Double-Door-Folding-Metal-Crate/dp/B00QAVNWSK/ref=zg_bs_2975401011_1

The last option is an x-pen, as previously mentioned. It is easy to adapt to your space and take on trips, but you’ll need to figure out a way to house both of your buns without them fighting or have two pens.

I am really considering building an NIC condo for my room and then figure something out for my room at school. I need some advice before I do this though.

So I am currently re-bonding my buns (which several of you know), and they are doing very well in neutral territory. If I keep the bonding up, and build a big enough NIC condo for both, would they be okay to live together? It gives them places to get away from the other if they start getting aggravated. I won’t put them in it until I feel comfortable that they should be okay and not fight. I am also not sure how long the bonding process should go on if they are doing good, or what my next step is in the process. It would make life a lot easier if they could love each other again and live together in a nice big NIC condo.
