So about a month ago, I was walking home from work in the rain one night, when I came across this little tiny rabbit (I think he’s a mini rex rabbit) just sitting on someones lawn and eating grass. Concerned for him, I approached and pet the rabbit until I could pick him up (he didn’t put up too much resistance, but he obviously didn’t like being carried), and took him home with me. Within the next few days, I made a bunch of “Found Pet” posters and put them up around my neighborhood. I’ve kinda fallen in love with the stupidly friendly thing, and I want to keep him. Is it okay for me to do so? The posters have been up for a month (I checked, they’re still there) and no one has called for him. Is it possible somebody put him out on purpose? I am capable of taking care of a rabbit, even went and got a largish cage which he climbs into willingly every night after running around my room. He gets veggies, hay, water, and pellets daily. I call him Benny.

        Can I keep him?

Yes, you can keep him. You tried to find  his owner and no one came forward.  He was probably deliberately put out by his owner. It unfortunately happens often. I volunteer at a rabbit sanctuary and almost all of the rabbits there were found running loose and fortunately rescued. A domestic rabbit won’t make it for long outside on it’s own.  There is always a slight chance that he accidentally escaped from his  home, but that is unlikely and surely his owners would have seen the posters and contacted you by now if that was the case. Thank you for rescuing this rabbit. If you need any more info on rabbit care, click the Bunny Info link at the top of the page.

Yes. Feel free to love him and give him the home and life he deserves.

Sadly many people think it’s OK to just let domestic rabbits go since they look kind of like wild rabbits. Double check craigslist’s lost pet section, JIC, but you’ve already made an effort to make sure he isn’t just lost, so the chances there is someone out there looking for him are small.
