        Hello
I was wondering if someone could please tell me if rabbits can sense if they are near water and on the edge of something where they could fall a great height.
Do they know to not keep going towards it, where they could fall off it?
i’ll be fixing the issue with chicken wire but for now i just need to know, so my mind is clear.

        Thank you

They do have the ability to perceive depth and heights. When Moshu was young and we’d place her on the bed, she would look down but not jump from it. As she grew older, she started jumping on and out from the bed. At present, if I place her on our washing machine, which must be four feet from the ground, she waits for me to bring her down but doesn’t jump down on her own. I think they have a good estimate of what is safe for them to do according to their abilities. Also, she never enters our bathroom because its tiles are generally cold and wet.

However, please do fix any related issues, as every bun is different. Some may make a better estimate of things and be more wary, some may not be able to do so.

I agree with Avantika. Yes, rabbits are able to sense danger/heights. They will generally approach a new area slowly and carefully, investigating before darting away if they find it to be scary. My rabbit has a fear of stairs and every time he approaches them he will sniff and peer over the edge before running away.

Again, it is important to fully bunny-proof any areas that are hazardous. Not only are some rabbits not as perceptive as others, but they have a tendency to be very careless when they get excited. When my rabbit binkies or races around the room he sometimes goes too far, sliding or accidentally knocking himself against furniture. It is better to be safe and protect the area than risk an excited bunny falling or slipping.

              Good luck!
