Dealing with sore hocks with Olivia. One of her hocks is quite bad. My vet is out till Dec 10 so we saw the non-rabbit vet who put her on Baytril for 7 days as a precaution as it looks a bit raw and open. I’m just so stressed. I’ve tried everything except bandaging and that will be an absolute last resort because I know she will get super stressed and tear it apart. I find it incredible that she is dealing with this when she lives on Snoozy mats and fleece! Not sure what else to do….

As for Bindi, I’m quite certain he has an ear infection. I’ve e-mailed my vet for advice since she’s away till Dec and haven’t heard back. She usually just advises me to start a round of Baytril Otic but I hate to do that if there is no infection. I’m pretty convinced but no way to know for sure on my own. And he’s lost about 4 ounces. I’ve been giving him Critical Care several times a day to try to keep his weight up. He usually loses weight when he needs his teeth done, which he’s just about due. The earliest I can get him in is December 10.

I hate how the other vets at the clinic (and no others in my City as far as I know) are not rabbit savvy. They can help in an emergency but there is only the one rabbit vet. Sigh….

        Vibes please!

Poor babies. Would one of those anti-fatigue mats help? Or would that be too squishy?

Is the non-rabbit savvy vet able to clean Bindi’s ear out? My vet cleaned Wooly’s ear and it seemed to help some.

Lots of {{{vibes}}} coming your way!

How about liquid band aid on the hock sores??

Re Bindi, I know you have tons of experience treating his ears. Could you start doing non medicated washes in the meantime?

Sending vibes for Olivia and Bindi…..

On the sore hocks, no advice for treating except maybe talk with Cottontail. She has lots of experience with foot bandages and removing them from when Pete hurt his foot.

While cushy flooring and beds help, we found that foot mats can also contribute to sore hocks if the mats get tight to the skin and thicken. While we didn’t experience sore hocks, I posted a while back about Marlee and Moshi having mats sticking out the sides of their feet. Our vet showed us how to pull the shed fur out of the mats to remove them and also how to do the same on the bottoms of their feet so that the fur on the bottoms of their feet is thick and fluffy for cushioning and not thick and dense. While Olivia doesn’t have giant furry lop feet, it might be worth checking her feet out for dense fur areas that mat need “fingernail plucking”.

                    Memory foam for Olivia perhaps?

                      Thanks everyone.

Jersey, I’m picking up some liquid bandaid today to try.

Jackrabbit- She doesn’t have any mats on her feet. Her fur is very short and she grooms herself very meticulously. I have to pull giant wads of fur off Bindi’s feet. He even gets mats between his toes.

Bam- I might get a memory foam mat to try. BB told me that Sea Grass Mats helped Aria’s sore hocks so I just got one today and I’m gonna try that. Memory foam will be my next option.

I’ve only just seen this tonight, LPT, I am so sorry to hear that both Olivia and Bindi are poorly.
Sending lots of healing vibes with all possible speed your way and will be thinking of you all. xx

                              Sending lots of {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Healing Vibes for Olivia and Bindi }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

When my vet told me the seagrass was better than soft flooring, I know it was counter-intuitive but it did help some, ie. she didn’t get worse after treatment.
                              .
The cream she gave me for Sammy’s sore hocks (2xdaily) is called:

Avi-X Soother “Plus” Cream, 1 oz. tube  (the description says, “May provide pain relief for wounds, reduce inflammation and offer a non-toxic alternative to anti-biotics for management of skin disorders.” etc.

Maybe the vet you are able to see will have some? My vet is a bird/exotics specialist (no dogs or cats) and it did seem to help Sammy’s feet heal.

I have no advice to give, just heartfelt good wishes. It can get so difficult to manage both work and our little ones. Love to Bindi and Olivia.
What ointment are you using for Olivia’s sore hocks?

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the late update.

Olivia is doing okay. Her feet are not too bad some days, but always pretty red. Some days they flare up and those are the days I treat them. I’m using Bag Balm sometimes and others Derma Gel. I wash her feet with Chlorehexidine scrub. They haven’t gotten worse so we’re just sort of maintaining for now. I bought some super luxurious memory foam bath mats and completely outfitted her cage in them. They are purple and very pretty for the Princess. They seem to have helped. And of course, Bindi got one too. He got a lovely blue grey one. I figured it would be good for him too since they are both getting on in years.

Bindi is going in to get his teeth checked and, if needed, filed down on Thursday.

ohhh can you post the bath mats? I use those puzzle foam square things, but I’m having no luck getting Rupert to use his pillows.

That is so appropriate for the King and Queen of The Forums =) Of course they should have memory-foam “thrones”. I bet they look super-cute on them!

My old dog got a memory foam bed when she was getting on in years, not for sores but for general old-age stiffness. She really loved it. I have a memory foam matress for myself, it is very comfy.

Bindi got his molars trimmed today. They were pretty bad as I expected and so long they were like little hooks and there was hay and food stuck in them. He must feel so much better now. He also got his tear ducts flushed out and the groomer spot washed him and trimmed his bum. He’s pretty disgruntled but he looks gorgeous.

The test for bacteria was negative but his ears are very red inside so he’s on Baytril Otic for 7 days as my vet suspects something may be brewing in there.
