I have a Holland lop rookie. I have noticed a while ago that Rookie has bumps on the outside of his ears. They feel like little pimples. They are not red and can be barely seen under the fur on his ear.and the most interesting part that it’s only along the large vein on both ears. Any ideas? He doesn’t seem to be scratching it in excess or anything either. He did just have two types of worms which he got treated for a few weeks ago. Could it be from that still? Isn’t there a worm type that causes skin irritation? Maybe one of the worms wasn’t killed off? I’m scared to Google it cause then he will be dying and having all kinds of deseases after I read that stuff.
And Im a little hesitant to go back to vet AGAIN…he has been there so many times since I got him they will think I’m the worst bunny parent ever!

How big are the bumps? Are they smooth or bumpy? It could be a number of things, but papillomas come to mind. Bunny syphilis comes to mind too, although bumps on the ears isn’t common. If they aren’t causing a problem and you bunny is okay otherwise (eating, pooping, etc.), then it probably isn’t an emergency. But I’d still have a vet take a look. Do you have a picture?

I don’t cause you really can’t see it without moving the fur completely and even then it’s fairly difficult. I will try and see if I can manage one.

I just tried and even I can’t see them. I can feel it but can’t see it. It’s funny they were more defined in the afternoon when I got home the they are now actually I think. But it might just be mind tricks.

Are they under the skin? Like scar tissue? Could he have had the veins in his ears punctured with a needle?

Happy and healthy in al regards, but weird stuff on his ears. I’ll try get a pic tomorrow. Noticed by 2 vets, but nothing said.

I tried reading the instructions but can’t post the pic. I think I attached it to my profile though. So it should be there in the photos.

I checked your image. The html code is a VERY long string. Did you try to post that from an image hosting site?

Okay, there’s an image now. His ear looks flaky. Is that what you’re talking about?

Yes. Each of those white spots has a tiny bump under it.

Could just be dry skin and the dead skin cells are clumping together.

You know that might make sense. I recall once I had Lancelot outside for some time on the grass. His shelter medical notes said that he might benefit from some “quiet time” on the grass. Actually – he doesn’t like to walk on grass. But anyway – I make an insect repellent that is safe for me and bunnies. Mosquitos are a serious pest in my front yard. I have mozzies buzzing around my bunnies if I take them outside. The insect repellent has soy bean oil, lemon grass, citronella, rosemary, and a few other essential oils for insect deterrence, and witch hazel or rubbing alcohol – whichever I have. I sprayed the oily repellent on Lancelot’s ears. The next day, his lumps and scabs looked a whole lot better. I had forgotten about that.

Rookie hasn’t been outside…but are you saying your mix might make his bumps go away?
I don’t think it’s just dead skin cause I tried just flaking it off and it feels really as if the bump is under the skin but the dry spot is just over it

Lancelot being outside was just chit chat about why I put mosquito repellent on his ears… I think it was the oil. Whatever oil – just oil. His ears feel dry to me, He has lumps under the skin, and dry flakes on top, similar to what you are describing. And generally dry, flaky, almost scabby ears. But they don’t irritate him. Asside from lumps o his ears he also has a few lumps under his skin. The vet said probably fatty cyst. Mot harmful. I tried to take a picture but the flash is too bright. I’ll try again in daylight. But I just put sunflower oil on is ears. I’ll tell you how they look tomorrow.

How are your bunnies ears doing? Mine is looking decent. The bumps will always be there I think. But the flakiness is gone. I think it is just dry flaky ear skin. Weird. But the oil seems to help. I swab it on with a cotton ball. Maybe sctarching the flaky ears causes bumps and scabs.

I haven’t gotten an oil yet. Are you saying all vegetable based oils work? He isn’t scratching in excess so I monitor that. They are just odd cause they are in a single line on the large vein on both ears.
He will get an end of the year vet visit anyways to get his nails clipped and stuff so unless it gets worse or he starts scratching it too much I will just try the oils till then.

Try any oil you use to cook with. Sunflower, safflower, soybean, olive, canola. Doesn’t have to be a special essential oil. Just something moisturizing. Like hand cream for us – but hand cream has chemicals that bunnies would lick, so cooking oil is harmless in that regard.

I took rookie to the vet and she said the bumps are fine and common. So nothing to worry about.
