I found some Ranitidine tablets at the chemist. Moshu’s being in-appetant and gassy since the past 2-3 days. I have simethicone suspension (mixed with dill and fennel oil) and I give it to her twice daily. I want to know how effective ranitidine is in comparison to simethicone?

It’s two different things, really. Simeticone helps break up big gas bubbles into smaller ones that are easier to pass. Ranitidine is a proton-pump inhibitor that reduces the amount or acidity of the stomach acid in humans, but in rabbits it functions as a gut motility drug that helps the intestines move. When my bunny Yohio had his stubborn tummy-trouble (that was later found to be caused by molar spurs) I gave both ranitidine and simethicone, per my vets order. 1 gave a tenth of a 150 mg pill crushed and mixed with water, once per 24 hours. Apparently there is a big difference between a toxic dose and a therapeutic, so if you give a little bit more or less of a pill it will still be fine (It is of course not possible to get 1/10 of a pill exactly with the tools you have at home). Yohio is 3 kg.

Just reinforcing what bam said – our Sukka has also gotten both simethicone and ranitidine. Ranitidine functions as a gut motility drug in rabbits whereas simethicone is thought to help rabbits with a gassy tummy by breaking up the gas bubbles in the intestine. There isn’t much in the way of veterinary study to support the use of simethicone, but it definitely can’t hurt and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to support its use.

A slow-moving gut can cause gas, so ranitidine cuts to the actual cause of the problem whereas simethicone only gives immediate relief to the symptoms. Using both at the same time is perfectly safe.

I thought Ranitidine is for gassy tummy, like Simethicone. But I learnt that its more of an alternative option to Metoclopramide. Moshu is fine now. I gave her both Metoclopramide and Ranitidine. Thankfully, they seemed to help. It was quite difficult to break the Ranitidine tablet since the lowest dose we get here is 150mg. However, I noticed that it dissolves better in water than Metoclopramide.

Redbunbun, it was on your thread (about Sukka’s possibly having Megacolon) that I first read about Ranitidine. That was a few months back.
