Felt like sharing pics of my bunnie’s litter box. The litter box discussion come’s up frequently, so I figured I’d post my pics. ANyone else have pics/ideas to post?

I use a 9 gallon mixing tub that costs $5 from Home Depot/Lowes. It’s roughly 28 inches long, 18 inches wide. I put in an extra large puppy pee pad with 3 of the sides folded in. Then 2 scoops of wood pellets. (Wood pellet debate aside…) Then the grate. It’s a 4 ft long fluorescent light diffuser that I cut to size (1 will fit 2 of these litter boxes). It cost $12 from Home depot. So $6 per litter box. Then I fill it with hay. I decided to use the grate because Morgana and Avalon shred their puppy pee pad every day, and Guin and Lancelot spend a lot of time hanging out in their litter box. To change the litter box, I have been cleaning it once a day. I grab the 4 corners of the pee pay, lift the whole mess up and toss in a grocery bag, carry it outside, and hold onto the pee pad, and dump the rest of the contents in the compost bin. With the grate – I think I’ll try dumping the pellets from the grate into the tray, topping up with fresh hay, adding a scoop or 2 of dry wood pellets, and then every second day tossing out the contents. It needs to be a combination of clean, odor free, and convenient.

thanks for showing us the pix. Very cute bunnies.

Be sure to completely cover the grate so no little bunny toes get caught, and it doesn’t create sore hocks. The hay looks like it’s covering. I would suggest shaved Aspen litter for better odor control. (Never use shaved Pine, but Aspen in shaved or pelleted form is the best odor control. Lasts for days.) You can put it under the hay or on top, or by itself if it doesn’t fall through the small openings.

Love the big container, btw. Bunnies love to have lots of room in their litter box, and containers like that are affordable as well as comfortable.

Thanks. Yes I do cover the grate very well – because the plastic edges are hard indeed. Does aspen litter swell up like wood pellets? I’ll give it a try. I’ve been using hardwood pellets coz they absorb large amounts of urine. I have used wood shavings in the past and they didn’t absorb enough. My bunnies pee large volumes…

Yes, the nice big trays look about the same size as mine which is a cat-litter-tray tray!!
The lime green one in the photo with Zou posing.
Don’t forget she’s 45 cm long from nose to bum, in preferred pooping position! (Yes, I just measured her !!) lol

I’d be curious as to how the urine is washed out of that grate ?

The grate is easy enough to spray off outside. But honestly it doesn’t get that dirty. The urine falls through. Only the part of the grate that is in contact with the wet shavings, gets some wet shavings stuck to it. I can see dried urine on the grate when I feed the buns kale, dandelion, beets, or something else that causes dark pee. Also – the bunnies don’t pee everywhere in the box. They tend to have their favorite spots. It is big enough that they can stretch out and chill, so they tend to pee on the back corners of the box. That means only the back corner of the grate is in contact with urine.
So it’s easiest to spray it with the garden hose, then spray vinegar or bleach or other cleaner of choice, then another blast of water.

                      Yes I agree !

A soak in white vinegar just lifts that leftover yellowy-orangey deposit left on litter trays or other surfaces SO easily . No need to scrub (it doesn’t come off anyway), just soak, rinse and wipe ! MAGIC !
