My 2.5 year old Holland Lop, Lola, passed away this morning at the emergency vet. She started gagging and brown stuff came out of her mouth after eating some food. The vet tried getting out what was stuck and she went into cardiac arrest. They are cremating her for us. I am so upset. I can’t believe this happened.

Thank you. I guess they think she was eating too fast

I’m so sorry for your loss of Lola. Rabbits can happen to aspirate food (=get food into their lungs) if they eat too fast. It’s not common and it’s very, very sad and unfortunate. I can see how you must be so upset by this sudden loss.

If you have more rabbits (there are two in your avatar pic), you can try and prevent this from happening again by scattering the pellets so the bunny has to look for it, that slows down eating. Or you can serve all pellets in a treat-ball, which also means eating gets slowed down. It isn’t really likely that this should happen to another one of your rabbits, but still, you might like to take precautions.

              Binky Free, Lola.

Thank you. Yes, we still have Leo. He turned 5 this year. I feel so bad for him, they really loved each other. He was upset this morning during her episode before we brought her to the vet. I wonder if he is wondering where she is… We don’t plan on getting another bun in any near years. They are so fragile and even though they have been our dearest pets, we couldn’t handle the heart break again. Leo will need a lot of extra, special attention so he doesn’t feel lonely. Does anyone else have just one bun? I’d like to print digital pics of Lola, ones that come out nice but idk how to do it really.
