This is my first time to ever post on here and I’m hoping I can reach out for some advice. An hour ago I walked into my living room and was horrified. Willow my 1 and a half year old Holland Lop had been bleeding all over. There were 4 blood stained areas on the carpet with clots mixed in. She had also urinated all over a blanket and there was blood all over it. Sheer panic mode when you find your baby in that state. Her nose was covered in blood, her feet, I was horrified. I immediately picked her up to examine her. The blood is coming from her vulva. It almost looks like a “period.” Except they don’t have a period. I have cleaned her up, was able to help her stop the bleeding. It’s dried now and has stopped for the time being. She is showing no other signs of illness. She is eating, drinking, relaxed, affectionate, etc. I’ve had her since she was 10 weeks old. She’s never been sick. I have no idea what is going on. Google is terrifying me– I see talk of cancer, tumors, and other horrible things. Most of what I read regarding that is in rabbits over 3-4. She’s not even 2 yet! I got online and requested the first available appt with an exotic animal vet in our area. She’s the best and has great reviews. Does anyone on here have an idea of what this could be? Anyone experienced this? I’m so worried about my little girl. She’s our baby and I can’t handle something being wrong while feeling totally helpless.

        Please Help (

So a vet visit seems to be booked.

I don’t know what’s wrong with your bun, willowbunny, the blood might come from the reproductive tract or from the urinary ditto, and the reasons could be many. Uterine cancer is not super-likely since she is so young. What’s important now is that you get her to a vet. That she eats, drinks and seems ok otherwise is of course great, it makes the prognosis way better. Keep her warm and hydrated until you get to the vet. And please keep us posted!

Thank you both for your replies. I have an appointment today at 3:30. I was up with her all night. She is still eating, drinking, acting like herself. I’m so thankful that if it is a uterine issue, signs showed so early in her life. My vet is going to do an exam and if Willow is healthy enough, an emergency spay will be done. It was something I was going to do soon anyway for preventative care. This literally happened out of no where. She’s got free run of the house unless I’m asleep or not home (for her own safety). I am with her so much and so aware of her moods, habits, personality, etc. I would have noticed any changes that “showed” an illness. Please be praying for a good prognosis and that a spay will take care of the problem. I will update you all after our appt. xo

Did the vet rule out anything?

Update!! Our vet is wonderful and has been Willow’s angel. We had an ultra sound done, blood work, and urine analysis. Our vet found blood/fluid in her uterus. She said Willow had a uterine infection and needed to spayed ASAP. She put her on antibiotics so we could stabilize her and start battling the infection prior to surgery. She was spayed today and everything went fine. She has pyometra, which is not extremely common in rabbits like it is dogs. With her being so young it is possible it was passed to her during birth. ( I am so thankful God was watching over her and allowed the bleeding to occur so that I would act right away as there were ZERO symptoms. We caught it early on and my vet believes she will go on to live a full life. We will continue antibiotics for 2 weeks. She also has pain medicine. I am happy to share she’s home with us and resting. Thank you all so much for caring, replying, and trying to help!!! ?
