My bunny (a rescue I’ve had for 10 months) was using her litter box 95% of the time until I bought her a new one 5 days ago, and she’s been protesting it all week my peeing on the floor.  The old litter box had shorter sides, and she was making a huge mess kicking stuff out of it.  I bought a new one with higher sides so that she doesn’t make a huge mess.  However, she hates it, and refuses to pee in it.  She’s been peeing all over the floor.  I’ve seen her sitting in the litter box eating hay many times, and she’s done some pooping in it, but refuses to pee in it.  I’m so sick of cleaning up her pee off the floor all day.  Any suggestions?

Wow that must be frustrating ! Can’t say i have any idea how to curb that behavior. Hopefully someone else may have some insight.

If you use paper to clean up after her, you can put the paper with pee on it in the box to make it clear to her that it is her toilet. Hopefully she’ll realize that it’s the place where she should go.

Is the new litter box big enough? Rabbits tend to favor big litter-boxes over small.

It’s bigger than her old one, so that shouldn’t be the problem.  I don’t know why she doesn’t like it.  She’s been continuously peeing on the floor, and every time I soak bedding in it, and put that in the litter box to try to give her a hint.  She’s not getting it, or is just doing it out of spite, I don’t know.  She’s got a very outward personality, and is very opinionated, so I wouldn’t put it past her.  I’m just about at my wits end, I don’t know what to do.

I had this exact same problem a few years ago. I tried a lot of things, cleaning the box more often, moving it around, cleaning it less often and nothing worked. In my case the two boxes were even the same size and height, but they had just an ever so slightly different shape to them (one was more rounded and the new one was more box shaped). The only way I found to ‘fix’ it, unfortunately, was to go out and buy a new one that looked absolutely identical (same brand and design) as the old one. They went right back to using it immediately!

She’s not doing it out of spite, but there clearly is something about the new box that she is unhappy with. She probably has a bunny-reason, meaning it’s nothing that a human can understand, so it’s not that you’ve done anything wrong. Bunnies, especially girls who often are the more territorial, can have very strong “views” on what’s ok to have in their home and what’s unacceptable.

She might get used to it still.

Just an update—she peed on the floor in her x-pen every day for 3 weeks, and then I finally thought to move the new litter box to the front of her x-pen rather than at the back of her cage (which is where it’s ALWAYS been located, it’s the spot she picked when I first brought her home), and all of a sudden she’s happy to use the new litter box. So, apparently new litter box needs a COMPLETELY different location for her to be happy with it. My bunny is high maintenance, lol.
