I may just be a paranoid bunny parent, but Doodle, my 8 week Holland Lop/Lionhead mix, has been going to the bathroom significantly less than usual. His litter box is usually full, but  he’s only pooped once in about four hours or so. He’s eating normally, drinking normally. His poops were smaller than usual and sort of egg-shaped, and a few had “tails” coming off of them, like tadpoles.

Should I worry? I called the vet and they said that they couldn’t give me any advice without an an examination, but I want to know if this issue will go away with proper care.

        Thanks all!

Abnormal poopand very small amounts of poop are always cause for concern. The tadpole poops sounds like there’s some hair in the poop, which happens because rabbits groom themselves and swallow hairs. You should feel his tummy so it isn’t bloated. If he lets you do a gentle tummy massage, it’s good.

Since he is so young, I’d recommend you to take him to a vet, since young animals are fragile. This sounds like the onset of stasis when the intestines slow down and finally stop working, a condition that is lethal if left untreated, but highly treatable if you do it in time.

Here’s a good article on GI stasis from a trusted source: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html.

Has the situation developed at all?

Seeing as he is only eight weeks old, I would maybe take him straight to the vet. With an older rabbit, you’re safe to keep an eye on them until the rabbit actually does stop eating, but such a young bunny is very, very fragile, like bam said!
