My bun is shedding and i didnt realize she has a bald spot so i kept on brushing her and then when i checked it, it looked red and bloody what can i put on it to make it better ??

Don’t panick. It’s scary for a bunny when the owner panicks. (Easier said than done I know, but still important.)

Is that an open wound? How can she have got it (if it is an open wound, it looks so red)? Got bit by another pet, got stuck in sth?

If it’s a wound that’s started to heal you can use neosporin cream. Not the type that has a painkiller added, just plain neosporin. It’s bunny safe. If it’s an open wound you need to clean it, regular soap (a tiny, tiny bit) and water will do if it’s a superficial wound. If it’s a deeper wound, you should see a vet.

Where on her body is this bald spot/wound located? (I can’t make that out from the pic.)

It’s in the middle of her back. I think she got it from me brushing her. It’s just rough and red it’s not bleeding or anything. If I can’t get neosporin , what can I use ?

You don’t have to put anything on it unless it seems infected. Neosporin is often used as a precaution, but other bunny-safe antibiotic creams are fucidin (fusidic acid) and polymyxin B. Or you can use an antiseptic cream that contains chlorhexidine or some type of silver-compound, but if you just want to soften and protect rough and dry skin, you can use bag balm or a beeswax cream. You obviously don’t want anything with a lot of perfume in it.

If you think it’s a bald spot due to a heavy molt, it’s nothing to worry about, the hair will grow back, some buns molt in patches like that and it looks scary, but it is normal.

Neosporin is a brand name, and it’s available in drug stores, grocery stores, or big store retailers. You can also get store brands or generics. The generic names for Neosporin are bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B (topical). As bam said, you only want the plain version, not any with painkillers added to the cream.

I just went to the pharmacy and he told me fucidin would be a substitute I’ll get it tomorrow. Could it be because I’m too rough or it’s just how it looks when they get bald spots ?

I have never seen a bald spot so red, to be honest, but the picture may not show the color accurately. If the brush or comb you’re using is hurting the skin, try to use a gentler method, mayby just gently pull out loose tufts of hair with your fingers or even use a lint-roller. Some buns have more sensitive skin than others.

                    Fucidin is good, it’s bunny-safe.

For tonight can I just put a thin layer of Vaseline on it ? Incase it’s causing her any pain. First thing in the morning I’ll go and get fucidin. I have to brush her everyday while she’s shedding right ? The problem is she doesn’t have those tufts of fur it’s just hairs from everywhere. I’ll definitely be more gentle when brushing her tomorrow.

I think a thin layer of Vaseline will be fine, it is protective.
You should brush your bun so there are less hair she can ingest when she’s cleaning herself, but if she has delicate skin you of course have to take that into account and use a soft brush. Someone in another thread said they use a rubber glove intended for horses, maybe that’s sth you could try? I’ve used a lint roller with great results, but you should use a generic brand, not a name brand because name brands have stronger glue that’s too strong for use on a bunny.

I use the brush that you can wear as a glove. It’s rubber with short bristles made for dogs. I brush her everyday for 10 mins. I don’t think I’m that tough because she just sits and doesn’t move so I don’t know why this would happen. Will the hair grow back or what ? I’m worried of her having a bald spot for the rest of her life .

I think this would freak me out too. I comb Willow with one of those steel combs. Now I’m a little paranoid about it. Being that she is longer haired I tug a little even and she doesn’t move either, so I would never even guess it may be doing some damage.

I don’t think you have to worry about a bald spot though, the hair should grow back if it was a little abrasion.

When I touch the area she doesn’t twitch or runaway so I don’t think it’s causing her any pain but it just looks so painful and red. Hopefully it grows back in a few days and nothing stays bald. I just feel so so bad for doing it to her cause the last thing I want to do is give her any pain

I put vaseline last night and it seemed to heal it. Its no longer red , its pink now. In the morning i touched it she seemed to twitch , i honestly dont know if its hurting her or what.

It’s great that it looks better! We can never know if our bunnies feel pain, we have to judge by their appetite, the frequency and size of their poop, their general appearance and how much interest they take in the world around them.

Of course you don’t want to hurt your bunny. The fur that came out was about to be shed, you can’t pull out fur that hasn’t started to fall off of itself with a simple brushing. Keep calm, it’s great that the vaseline seems to have helped, it would not have helped if there were an infection,

I got the fucidin and put some on her. How many times a day do I put fucidin ? I’m surprised it healed so quickly , it’s now pink and I will upload a picture of it when I’m on my laptop ! She’s being extra sleepy so do you think it’s just because she’s shedding or she’s in pain ? When she was running in the balcony she was doing binkies and jumping on boxes and just seeming happy.

You can put a thin layer of fucidin on twice a day or if it’s looking very good, once a day will do.
Many rabbits feel a little under the weather when they are going through a molt, so extra sleepiness may be due to the molt. As long as she eats and poops and all that. I very much doubt she’s in pain if the bald patch is healing so quickly and well!

Edit: I just saw that you were worried she’d have a bald spot for the rest of her life: No she won’t. It grows back. She may get more bald spots during this particular shed, but the hair will eventually grow out again. You should see new super-short hair beginning to come out pretty soon, like in a week or so.

Im finally not feeling that bad about the bald spot cause she is a very fast healer! I am already seeing short little fuzzy white hairs just 2 days after it was so red!

                                        Here is the picture:

Its just pink now and almost normal skin color. Everyone in my family keeps jokingly blaming it on me. So i cant wait for the hair to fully grow back so we can stop thinking shes in pain when shes not .

By any chance do you know how to wash away the fucidin once the hair is back? The hair around the area is like stiff and feels dirty.

I’d just use soap and water, a tiny bit of mild soap, or schampoo. It’s probably the grease in the ointment. I don’t think you need to use the fucidin any more.
But soap and water, pat dry with a soft towel and then a tiny bit of vaseline on the bare skin I think would do fine.

So I’ll have to dunk her in water ?

No, don’t dunk her. You would have to sit her in a bowl or basin, wash the sticky clumpy stuff out with a little soap and water, then use a jar of lukewarm water to rinse the part where you have used soap. It’s just a partial bath, you don’t want her to get wet all over. If another person can help you I think that would be very helpful.

If you think this will scare her sth terrible, try and brush out the residual fucidin ointment with cornstarch or just leave it, she will soon shed that hair too and then the problem is solved. Do what you believe is best for her, the cream that’s left in her fur is just a cosmetic problem.

Once she’s done shedding and it doesn’t go or I feel like it needs to be washed away , I may just give her a bath.
She has had many baths for a bunny and she hates them , so only if it’s necessary I’ll do it. Thanks for the replies , and obviously making me not panick a lot !!
