So, my rabbit Merle was neutered 3 days ago (the 4th), and the vet told me I had to keep the e-collar they put on him for at least w week while he heals. The first two days weren’t bad for him, but today he has gotten his ear stuck behind the other ear twice, and it has left him extremely distraught. I am afraid that the collar is doing more harm than god, but I don’t want to take it off and have him hurt the stitches. Is 3 days long enough? I don’t want him to be miserable any longer, but I’m also not able to watch him a whole lot right now to make sure he isn’t picking at things. Also, he is a pretty new rabbit and, unfortunately not very sociable, so it is difficult for me to take things off and put them back on.

Please help my poor bunny! D:

          Bunnies should not wear e-collars.

Rabbits have to double digest their food. They do this by eating their cecals. They can not reach their cecals if they are wearing an e-collar.

I agree, It could be dangerous, as your bunny could get sick. I know that human stitches only stay in for about a week, but Id check with one or two different vets and get their opinions before taking off the collar. I’ve never heard of a bun wearing an E-collar after a neuter though. Good luck with your bun! I hope he heals soon!

Thank you both. I did some research, and just took off the dang thing. Poor guy was so relieved to have it off. I guess you can’t always trust somebody just because they work at a vet clinic!

Rabbits are not part of vets general education. Only vets who specialize in exotics learn proper rabbit care.

Most bunnies do not have to wear E-collars after a neuter. However, in some cases it’s necessary. My little (Bridge) Mini-Rex had to wear one as he was constantly picking at the area causing bleeding. Pretty unpleasant business but you have to help them out with the cecals.
