So we have Goji in a 4×4 nuc cube pen that’s about 2 squares tall. We’ve had him for about a month now and he keeps getting out. We got U nails to secure the pen in place, have the corners covered with cardboard and will buy more nic cubes to make it taller if need be, because he keeps getting out!!! I love him, I do, but he’s getting on my nerves. He pushes the cage around or jumps over it on an hourly basis. We tell him no and then spray in front of him or on his body when he tries to get out, and he understands “No!” I’m beginning to think he’s just a little goon. We’ve come home to him out of his cage almost every time we go out and he runs behind the couch as soon as we get home because he knows it’s bad.
Really It would not be a big deal, besides the fact that he pees on the bed because he can see Juniper (we have a blanket over the side of her cage that faces him) and he’s constantly waking us up at night with his antics. We’ve resorted to putting him in a cat carrier when we go to bed or go out because we just can’t handle it anymore. So my question is HOW do I teach him to stop?! I know he’s smart, and he knows he’s being bad. He just doesn’t seem to care!!
(Yes he is neutered. And he’s 2 years old. Also I’ve already tried switching their cages but Juniper jumps out of his too)

        – the reason for the title is that it’s actually pretty impressive when he jumps from a certain corner. Instead of going over, he climbs onto to pen, launched himself sideways and jumps off Junis cage onto the bed, then does a 180 to jump onto the ground.

Wow he is an energetic little so-and-so! You’ll need a roof. I use NIC cubes myself. Dont’ know if you zip-tie or use the plastic connectors. The connectors make roofing it easy. If you want to be able to open the “lid” easily, make 1 row of roof with the plastic connectors, then make a panel to fill the gap, but make it 1 row and 1 column larger than you need. Just rest it on.
How much exercise time does he get outside the NIC cube? Is it possible to expand his play area? Perhaps a home base with – say half a bedroom of space? My 4 bunnies each “require” different amounts of space. Lancelot demands the most. If I don’t let him out of his room to explore my bedroom, he’ll dig up the carpet. Guin won’t leave her space. Won’t step out of the door. Morgana and Avalon are trying to tear up my carpet, so I give them as many chew boxes as the desire. Sometimes, rearranging their living/play area, can overcome behavioral issues.

You need a top. Willow was jumping over 3 feet out of hers. (this is a tiny lionhead too) You could either use more of the nic panels. We are using a pet pen, so we binder clipped a curtain to the top. We used a LOT of binder clips so there was no place to squeeze through. It’s easy enough to remove for c leaning though, so for now I like it.

Eventually I want to build a nice looking hutch.

Generally if we’re home and the room is clean we let him out, unfortunately we don’t have to room to expand his area, it takes up most of the bedroom already (we live at BFs parents house so moving his space somewhere else isn’t an option either)
I’m thinking a roof may be what I need, I just feel like I’m jailing him in there lol Better than him being in a cat carrier for hours at a time though lol. Thanks guys

Well I went to the dollar store to buy more cubes and they done have any! (We buy the cheap ones because nobody here seems to carry the ‘real’ ones)
Hopefully a blanket works lol. It feels so mean to cut him off from us like that though aha

Ok seriously I think he just does it for fun. I have his pen opened up completely except for one corner gated off and guess where he seems to think would be a prime spot to hang out?

Mmm..  In his Pen?!  Lol. Seriously, if thats right, that is SO rabbits. Especially during the day time. Theyll hang out in their digs even though they’re free to roam.

Have you tried Target and Walmart for the grids? It does sound like a top is the best bet.

I just feel like I’m jailing him in there lol

I completely understand feeling like that and feel it myself at times. But it’s for his own safety. Also, remember they are prey animals, so having something overhead is likely going to make them feel more secure. He probably will make you feel guilty initially though.

You might be successful with a blanket or sheet. It didn’t work well for me in the past. My rabbit ended up getting on the sheet and using it like a hammock or base to jump from.

Thread title reminded me of this rabbit.  Never ceases to amaze me.

That gif is almost exactly what he does!! I wish I could catch it on camera.

Yep! The door was open and I moved some of the cubes to block off the couch (turned on its side to make room for his highness) and where I keep their food. He went behind/over it

Our local target closed last year (Canada) but we had checked there when we got Juniper last October and found none, as well as asking staff at Walmart and they didn’t have any
I feel like he will probably definitely try and use the blanket as a hammock/launch pad (everything seems to be a launch pad to him though)

Right now I’m trying a completely random idea of threading yarn all through the top to deter him, I bought some to weave into a too-big-of-a-space gap between bars on the mouse cage and so far it’s worked (only in one corner yet) he can’t get through it and won’t try to get on top of it lol. I’m sure he’ll chew it up soon enough though.
Gonna pick up more binder clips next time we go out so we can try a blanket on top, I hope it works!

What time of day does he hop out? I keep Lancelot on a schedule so he doesn’t dig up the carpet. During the day when he sleeps, he is in his half of his bedroom. When I am ready to go to bed and I put the dogs in their room, then I let Lancelot out of his bedroom to play in my room. Since he knows and expects it, he doesn’t get all worked up and dig the carpet. (Unless I forget to let him out!). While loose in my room, he used to thump under the bed at night. It was frustrating. I woke up every time he thumped. So I made a NIC cube frame around the base of the bed so he can’t get under. He still enjoys his night time free time, and he doesn’t thump anymore. Perhaps figuring out a routine play time would help? Bunnies typically sleep during the day ayway. Mine are asleep by 9am and waking up by 5pm.

They usually sleeps from about 10am-4pm when I’m home (bot sure about weekdays as I go to school at 8) and then 11/12pm-6am but Goji wakes up periodically to try and get out if we don’t have him crated. Juniper is usually pretty happy to just watch us from her cage, but as long as Goji is awake he’s generally plotting an escape, even when he’s out free ranging ( usually around 7pm-11pm weekdays or 1pm-4pm weekends) he’s trying to get into places he knows he’s not allowed. He’s never just content with what he’s got. I saw a thread about teaching rabbits tricks though and I think he might benefit from that if I can find something to train him with that actually keeps his attention lol

He sounds like a real little busy boy. You might have to use some creativity to satisfy him. Traingin tricks sounds interesting. I’ve seen videos of rabbits running an obstacle course. I may have missed it somewhere else in yoru post – but is he bonded or does he live alone? You mentioned Juniper. Do they live together?

We are planning to bond them in the future (the reason we said yes to a friend offering us Goji for free) but Juniper isn’t spayed yet as local vets cost a fortune. I’m hoping that once he has a friend it will also help keep him out of trouble. Her cage is next to our bed and his is against a wall where the couch used to be a few feet away

A friend will for sure help keep him out of trouble. He will be more interested in cuddling and snuggling.
