My dwarf has had a weepy eye for the past several weeks and I’ve taken her to the vet twice.
The first time, they examined her eyes and front teeth but couldn’t see anything wrong, so I was told to wipe her eye with a warm washcloth and bring her back if it didn’t clear up.  It didn’t, so I took her back.  They flushed both of her tear ducts (without sedation) and told me that quite a bit of mucus was dislodged from her nasal cavity, so I’m hoping that was the problem and that she’ll be fine now.  They gave me 2 different eye drops to give her 3x a day for the next 7 days and told me to bring her back if it still doesn’t clear up.

I pray to God that it clears and I don’t have to take her back, because I was also told how common it was for netherland dwarfs to have the roots from their back molars grow up into the nasal cavity and make abscesses.  If this were the case, then she would have to undergo major surgery to have teeth extracted at 6 years old.  She doesn’t appear to be in any pain.  She eats like a horse and still runs and binkies for her treats, so I’m hesitant to think it could be a tooth problem, but I’m so worried about it that I’m losing sleep.  She’s my best furry friend in the whole world!!

Has anyone else had weepy eyed bun problems, got the flush and it cleared up?  Or did you find out your rabbit had hidden dental problems?  If they had dental problems, did you have to have teeth pulled?  How old were your buns?  Did they pull through the extraction and live with missing teeth okay?

Sorry for all the questions.  I know I’m putting the “horse before the cart” in jumping to the worst conclusions before I even know for sure.  But I get so worried when it comes to my furbaby.  She helped me get past the deaths of both of my parents and has been there for me for the past 6 years.  I owe her a lot!

That is very sweet you two had each other through such troubling and painful times.

We understand worry here as our babies are such delicate creatures. I wish I had some reassurance however I don’t have any experience with this. I am hoping other members may have some thoughts

I can say on my last visit to the rabbit rescue there was a bunny scheduled for tooth removal and the lady stated it would lead a normal life afterwards. I have also read this is the case for other bunnies.

Please keep us updated on her progress !

My bunny’s also got Weepy eye problems. It’s been going on for a while, the vet took an x ray of her head and there was no teeth problems.
I’ve been treating her with eye drops and it’s been about 2 months. The vet says it’s an infection, and it is getting better just really slowly.

So sometimes teeth or abscesses aren’t the problem so u may not have to go through all that. Hopefully it just clears up with the eye drops u have. Even if it takes a while

Also I have heard that teeth operations usually aren’t that bad anyway. So even if she had to go through that I think she’d be fine

Thanks so much for the reassurance!  She had her ducts flushed last Wednesday and has been getting 2 different drops 3x a day (much to her displeasure).  I was directed to give them for a week – and if it doesn’t clear up, we’d have to get her mouth x-rayed to see if there’s any underlying problems.  I just pray the drops clear it up.

I’ll keep you posted on her, and good luck with your bun too!

My bun has chronic runny eyes. He’s 8 years old and has had several X-rays which have shown no tooth root problems, In his case, my vet suspects it’s caused by a thickened nasal cavity from sinus problems. He gets them flushed when he goes for his molar trims several times a year but they usually just start running again a couple of days after.

I wash his eye area every day with a saline solution and then dry with a kleenex.

                  Good luck!
