An Update on Chom

So we were having some problems with Chom. Including wet bum, and some sore hocks starting on all four paws.

I sadly have been unable to find a ride to the vet still. Everyone I know is working when she is at the office, and she isn’t there on Saturdays, which is when I can get a ride. *sighs*

But we spoke at length over the phone today and she gave me some tips and advice for Chom’s feet. Because it is the beginning of the sore hocks she advised we clean the floors every day, to stop bacteria. That we soak a towel full of epsom salt water and have him sit on the towel so his paws get nice and damp once a day for about half an hour to an hour. Then to put on some neosporin. ((I have store brand version, which she said wa A-OKAY!)) and put a few thick layers of gauze over his feet, and then to wrap it in special bandaging which I had ordered ages ago in case of emergency. So now he has thickly padded, cushioned feet, that are lime green, and he is pretty mad about it. Granted the wrapping isn’t too great, but it was my first time doing it today.

Since his feet have been wrapped I noticed he has been much more active, which is exciting. I think his tootsies are bothering him a bit less.

Also for his pee bum, a lot of people speculated a UTI. She said for now ot give him some cranberries everyday, and even some juice, and to take away all excess sugar and calcium h=just in case it is a uti, which she said, after asking a list of questions she does not think it is. She told me to watch him very carefully today, which I did. And I don’t think it is a UTI!

We put their hay in a pile, because both of them have snubbed the hay racks we have purchased and used prior. Well Chom always did enjoy flopping into his hay pile, which we never had a problem with. Well it seems that he had also decided that instead of using the litterbox, that he would use the hay pile instead! So he literally was flopping into his pee, and by the time I came home to change the hay, he was soaked. The water dish is near the hay pile, so every time I pulled the wet hay off the floor, I assumed the dish had gotten knocked into! 

He also was having a bit of urine scald from soaking in his pee, and the vet advised us to put some diaper rash cream over it, which we did, and it already looks MUCH less enflamed and bothersome, and now he lets us touch the skin wihtout a fight.

We will be keeping close tabs on him, and speaking with the vet again in the morning. I’ll update everyone on his poor little feets. I have foam flooring in our room which is where he mainly resides. I had a little bed for him down, but he and Speckles decided that made a better toilet. They both love to pee on anything soft. So putting down absolutely anything soft on the floor for him to lay on just ends up coated in pee in a few minutes. 

anyway he is doing better by all appearances and I will keep you all updated!

I’m not convinced that flopping in in pee is sufficient enough to wet the skin. Ever seen a bunny in the rain? Skin is still dry. Ever tried to wash a bunny? You have to really work the water in to get the skin wet. Hay doesn’t stay saturated either. Urine flows through it to whatever is underneath. Sitting on wet hay will irritate his feet though. Where on his body is the urine scald?

Thank you for the update on Chom! I’m glad he’s more active now with the wrappings on his feet.

The urine-problem is mysterious though.

I hope he’ll continue to improve and that an opportunity for you to take him in arises. It’s good to hear that you see some improvement. We’ll be happy for updates!

Vanessa it’s on his thighs. Right where he flopped.

And He was bone dry before the flop, and completely soaked after it. I checked and was stunned. He pees a lot hen he does go, and like I said the hay was directly on the floor, so he literally flopped into his puddle of pee.

Bam I’m glad it is a bit better now. We will just be making sure to keep a VERY close eye on him at all times. He is resigned to the fact that I’ve wrapped his feet too. He stopped tearing at the bandages and is just leaving them be thankfully.

Wow that sounds frustrating. Maybe a grate so the pee falls through and he can’t flop in it?

Have you tried a pee pad underneath the hay ( not talking about the plastic backed ones, but a re-washable pad) to see if it would soak up the pee so that when he flops into the hay, its not there?

Its just a suggestion, and one that might be viable, but you might be washing it a lot.
