We just brought this little boy home and are wondering what breed he might be. He is young (2 months) so he will grow more and he has distinct markings but they don’t fit perfectly with breed standards. His body is fully arched. He has lots of space, but we are trying to anticipate how big he might grow, though time will tell best on that one.

Your images were broken. I tried to fix them, but I couldn’t copy the code from your photobucket. So I just put links there.

            Gorgeous !

He looks similar to a Rhinelander. Do you know how much he weighs?
            What is his fur like?

Fur looks Rex like in pictures… I’m going with a Rex or Rex mix with English spot pattern. Do his whiskers curl or are slightly crinkled?
Rhinelanders are tri colour from memory.

He is about 3 pounds (I weighed him holding him and let him hop on the scale himself.) His fur does seem quite plush, but he sits up higher than I thought a rex would sit. I don’t think his whiskers are crinkled, they curve forward gently. When he made his way out of the cage this am and we could see him a little better we could tell some spots were darker and some lighter. There is a patch behind his head that is particularly light and an orange color. But he doesn’t seem to have enough spots to be a rhinelander. So i was thinking a rhinelander/rex mix maybe? Of course, this is me guessing based off descriptions more than hands on experience. So we might be expecting him to get to about 6-10 lbs? At first I thought he might be a Rhineland that didn’t conform to breed standards, but then noticed he seemed quite plush so I figured maybe he was the product of a non breed standard Rhineland with a Rex? If that made sense. Last night I worried myself thinking because there are only two spots he might have checkered giant in his lineage (mixed with rex) and was worried about biting possibilities, but when he came out we can see the spots are less black and more of a dark dark brown and a less dark brown, so we are thinking more of a rhinelander/rex mix. Though I didn’t read anything about English Spot, so I will look that up. I am less worried about biting now that he’s come out and shown how friendly he is. He is quite spunky and very curious too. I have a baby gate set up around his cage and the moment you go into that area, he runs to the door to come out.

He has the nose butterfly markings, eye circles, cheek spots, dark ears and the stripe down back/herringbone.  Then he has two spots on one side, three spots on the other.  Fully arched.  Long face, upright tall ears, so he fits a lot of the description of English Spot or Rhineland, but he has fewer body spots and his back stripe is broken up.  I am uncertain how to tell the fur type, but I think he does look “fuzzy” so probably has rex as well.

I think Rex mix as well. Very super adorable!

I’ve not heard of checkered giants being biters before. Personally I think biting is less to do with breed and more to do with:
                      -health
                      -fear aggression
                      -hormones
                      -being mishandled

The spotting pattern can occur many different breeds so it can be hard to discern breed on that alone. You’ll probably get a better idea from body form and weight once he’s over one year of age.

You also can look into what show breeders are around in your area often their stick that aren’t show quality end up in the pet market.

Honestly, he looks like a doll. : )
Breed aside, the main thing we have to understand is that they are master and we are slave.

What JG said about age is important. Size, shape, and fur texture all develop with age, so trying to guess too early is misleading.

I think a rex or rex mix! Not sure how common rhinelands and true English spots are in your area. Those markings can occur in most breeds, so particular colors and spots don’t usually make a breed.
