It’s kind of a long story but I had a big family emergency and had to leave my bunny in the care of my neighbors for 2 months. I’ve known these people for 9 years and trusted them to care for her but I went to visit her today and was appalled. I took her home immediately and tried to clean her up as best I could. It honestly looks like they didn’t clean her home or cut her nails or even feed her the proper diet that I gave them the money for at all. Now I’m trying to get my poor baby help as soon as possible but there aren’t any exotic vets in the area open until Monday. I don’t believe anything is life threatening but her eye is not good. It looks like she got something sharp stuck in it and now she has swollen eye lids and cloudy discharge with a little blood. I checked her teeth to see if they looked like they had separated or changed in any way that might indicate they are blocking a tear duct but I don’t think that’s the case. Her teeth are about the only things on her that look okay now. I feel like a terrible care taker for not realizing my neighbors wouldn’t care for her the way I instructed but at the time I had no other options. All I’m looking for now is advice on how to soothe her discomfort in an immediate way. I tried looking for stores with meadowsweet tea or camomile tincture but no one has it. I would order it but it would not arrive until Monday and I need it now. I hate seeing her in pain and I just need something to prevent it from getting worse and to help her relax. Please help me.

I would think a vet of any nature could at least help with the most basics of pain relief until Monday ?

For an eye, you could (And should) see any vet. Don’t put tea on it, it won’t help. It’s important to go asap to any vet, she could lose her eye.

Hmm, do you have a picture of her eye? Your description sounds like conjunctivitis, which would be consistent with living in unsanitary conditions.

Thank you for your replies. The issue with the vet is that there is flooding in my area and all clinics are closed until Monday morning at 7 am and the only 24 hour emergency place said they do not accept rabbits. I tried to get a picture but she just wants to run and play. He mood is normal which is strange because my rabbit is sort of a drama queen about pain, which is unusual as I understand it. She’s eating well too. I cleaned her eye with saline and found a small sharp foreign object. Since I removed it the swelling has gone down considerably. She is still going to the vet on Monday as soon as possible as I need her feet looked at too. My poor baby is in rough shaped but I think she will be okay for tomorrow until we can get her help. Never trust anybody with your baby’s health I guess.

I’m sort of new to forums so please forgive me if this double posted.

Thank all of you for your replies. The issue with the vet is that there is bad flooding in my area and all clinics are closed until 7 am Monday morning. The vet I got in contact with just told me to clean her eye as best I can and watch her closely. I cleaned her eye with saline and found a small sharp foreign object. Once removed the swelling went down considerably and her mood has improved. She’s running around and binking now, which is unusual for her if she were still in pain. She tends to sort of try and hide in my bed when she’s hurting and beg to be pampered. She has a healthy appetite now as well. I am still taking her to the vet as soon as possible and cleaning her eye every chance I get but I think that she will be okay for the 30 or so hours until I can get her professional help. Thank you all for your concern.

Oh, also I tried to get a photo but she wouldn’t stay still. She’s excited to be home.

Oh my, well if you found a foreign object in there then there could be damage to the cornea. Definitely get is checked out ASAP. As KK said, there have been cases where bunnies have lost an eye. I wouldn’t mess with her actual eye too much, maybe just clean the outside area a bit. I hope you can get her in first thing Monday. I know you’re experiencing some unusual circumstances with the flooding and all.

Yes I have not been putting anything in her eye just cleaning the discharge around it. There was a little blood when I first started before I removed the object but I haven’t seen any in hours. Hanna has has issues with this eye before. She injured it when she got too excited and hit her head so I want to be very careful. She’s older now so I don’t want to take any risks. At least I know now that she didn’t have a tooth issue or a tumor though. I’m always worried about those.

It sounds like you may have found the cause. Otherwise I was thinking she may have scratched it with her nails. Healing {{{vibes}}}. I hope you don’t have difficulty getting her seen Monday.

Just a side note regarding the emergency clinic: I think if she was in dire straits, just turn up. It seems ridiculous that they won’t accept certain pets! The vets should have basic training to be able to handle it.

I feel like a terrible care taker for not realizing my neighbors wouldn’t care for her the way I instructed but at the time I had no other options.

None of this is your fault. You’re being too hard on yourself! How you know this would happen? And I take it they didn’t let you know she has something wrong… I’m sorry you came home to this.

Please keep us updated on how you get on.

Her swelling is no longer noticeable. There is still a little discharge but it’s not nearly as much. She slept next to me and woke up pretty happy so I don’t think she’s in nearly as much discomfort or pain. She doesn’t usually want to sleep in my bed if she’s not feeling well. We still have an appointment at 7. To be honest the people at the 24 hour clinic have a poor track record. I would be nervous about taking her there anyway. My parents have a friend who is a vet and I was able to do a video call with him late last night. He gave me a lot of advice on getting the swelling down and preventing any further infection until tomorrow. It’s helped.

I guess I just feel like I abandoned her to horrible conditions. It’s sad to see how dirty and unkempt she was. I have had Hanna for 9 years and have always tried to keep her happy and healthy and I just feel like I failed her.

Thank you for your support and well wishes.

Hanna and I just got back from the vet. The doctor gave me an ointment for her paws and flushed her eye. He also gave me some medicine to give her with a syringe. He said it didn’t look like the damage to her eye would cause any further complications but we have a follow up appointment Friday to be safe and see if she needs anything else. Thank you for all your replies.

Eye injuries can be scary; and so can leaving your loved buns in someone else’s care. I’m glad that you were able to get some help from the video-vet and also your doctor. You said she got ointment for her paws, does she have sore-hocks or urine scald? Poor thing. I’m glad that even though her care was apparently appalling, that she’s safe with you and nothing was life-threatening… Sending good vibes for a speedy recovery and happy days!

My neighbors never saw fit to trim her nails so she did have the beginning of sore-hocks. Also two of her nails got so long that they broke off. Yeah leaving your bunny with others is always scary. I never like to do it but my mother was dying so I needed to be with her. My mother ended up surviving and I’m happy to say Hanna will too. Thank you for all your well wishes for her.
