Hello all, so here is my question.

A friend of mine has a rabbit and is going away for two weeks and asked me to check in on him every 2 – 3 days.  He has a large cage which is left open, in a room he can run around in.  However he’d be all alone with theoretically only my visits every 2-3 days (I live quite out of the way and work full time).  I was kind of horrified at the thought of leaving an animal alone without stimulation or attention for days at a time over two weeks.  I’d only have enough time to spend maybe 30 mins there, so I’d like to know your thoughts.  Is this acceptable? As I said I was horrified but then realised I don’t know anything about rabbits and their social habits and requirements.

        Thanks for your help!

Based on my boys, there are quite a few problems that could come up – including nozzles on water bottles clogging up and then they could be without water for a couple of days. Also they do sometimes have a tendency to urinate on their hay (this might just be mine) and they only eat food that has been put out regularly.

So there are a couple of problems outside of the amusement issue that I could foresee, so it would be good to know more about the set up – is the bunny drinking from a bottle or a bowl? How is the hay stored. How often is your friend normally cleaning him out…?

I think it may be safer on the bunny and perhaps even easier on you to set up a travel cage and have the bunny stay with you during your friends trip. A too small cage for a few weeks seems better than any number of things that could go wrong with him being alone so long.

Absolutely not a good idea. Bunnies can get sick and die in the same day….even if they seemed fine the day before. This happened to one of my buns. Especially if you don’t know the rabbit well or the signs of illness. By the time a bunny stops eating, he may already be quite ill. Bunnies are champions at hiding their illnesses.
