Potus crossed the bridge yesterday. At 7:30a I noticed he was ill, so I raced around town grabbing sick bunny supplies. But when I got home, he was much worse. His mouth was gaping open and he did not have control of his legs. So we raced him to the vet. He said he thought Potus had maybe injured himself or he had a kidney infection. He gave him a pain shot and sent him home with an antibiotic and pain meds. An hour later he passed away in my husband’s arms. We let Annie see him. She groomed his little face and ears and paws. She tried to cover him in the towel he was laying on. So heartbreaking. He has now going Obie and Biscuit under the bush out back.

It will never cease to amaze me how within hours of being fine, seeming fine, a bunny can so quickly die.

        Binky free, Mr President xx

I’m so sorry, BM. It’s so heartbreaking, that a bunny can go so quickly. At least he didn’t have to suffer long. He had the best bunny parents. I hope Annie will be fine.

Every time I read a new post on this section of the forum, I put myself at your places. I find it frightening. Losing such lovely, innocent companions. The only thing that gives me some relief and you too should take shelter in that thought, that in a world where so many animals are abused, our furry friends were loved and cared for. They got no idea what pain they leave us in. I really wish rainbow bridge exists. The thought that our souls will meet someday, somewhere gives peace.

I’m so sorry, BM.  I saw this thread last night and couldn’t think of what to say.  I know Potus had a wonderful life with you, and there are a lot of bunnies waiting at the Rainbow bridge to greet him.  I think it’s good that Annie got to see him.  Our Tilly and Zoey got to see Pete after we lost him and I think it helped them to grasp that he was gone.

If you need a shoulder, you know we’re all here.  *hugs*

I can totally relate. I noticed my bunny Spencer seemed unwell at midnight on October 26. He was lethargic and didn’t want a small piece of fruit I had offered him as a treat. He declined very quickly. I rushed him to the vet at 1:30 am and he had a seizure on the way there. By the time we got there at 2 am, the vet said there was nothing she could do for him and that he was dying so he was euthanized. It was shocking. He had been playing and cuddling with my fiance and I all day, watching the Patriots game.

The warnings about taking a rabbit to the vet if they haven’t eaten or pooped for 12-24 hours makes no sense to me. When my rabbits have shunned a yummy treat they would usually eat right up (like a small piece of apple or banana) I immediately get concerned for them. I sure as hell wouldn’t wait 12-24 hours to get them to a vet. Within an hour or so of them not eating foods they would normally eat, we’re off to the vet.

It’s so hard to lose them so suddenly but it’s a better alternative than a long, drawn-out illness. We need to try to take comfort in that.
