Nalu is a 2 mo. old Holland Lop bunny. But recently the orange fur on her ears began falling out and just thin grey hair remains! She looks like an old bunny now, and has also developed the same color fur ribbon around her cheeks!

I’m wondering if this is normal. I read somewhere that it could just be a bunny’s “ugly phase” and that due to genes some bunny’s will have thin hair on their ears until they age to about 6 months it will grow back.

Being a new bunny mama, it just makes me nervous to see on such a young bunny. I want to make sure it isn’t anything else. She is having normal behavior, doesn’t itch abnormally.. No crust on the insides and are clean in there. So I just don’t know. I want to rest easy and know if it’s something she will grow out of and not anything harmful.

I live in Hawaii.. molting wouldn’t be normal either..

Everybunny molts, no matter where they live on this planet. A bunny normally goes through 2 big molts and 2 smaller as an adult, some bunnies shed all the year round. They don’t have continous hair-growth like humans, so they molt, then get new fur.

Could you get us a picture? Unlesss there are skin-flakes like dandruff and/or itching or any redness of the skin (irritation), I’d chalk it down to sth normal. With mites and other skin-parasites, you never just see thinning of the fur, theres always some compromizing of the skin.

As for changing color, young bunnies of certain broken colors do that, just like young dogs and horses. Often light animals get darker and dark animals get lighter.

it’s a relief to know! I’ve gotten use to the hair being sparse, but I couldn’t help but worry when she first lost the hair! It’s been several days and there’s been no change in her mood or behavior. Glad she’s just going along with the natural motions

            thanks for your reply

Here’s a picture of Nalu’s ears! Does this look like a natural occurrence?

He looks normal to me. Soo cute! My mini lop Bam has somewhat thin fur on his ears, so you can see the skin. He’s been that way as long as I’ve had him for (4 years). Maybe it’s a lop thing?

I agree. It’s probably just a combination of shedding and color changing. Most bunnies have a different coloring as adults than what they had as babies.
