It’s something that has to be experimented with lol

My male bun does okay with the hay in the litter, eating as he potties (until he potties on it…)

My female can’t stand the hay in the litter. She will end up spending like 10 minutes just ripping all of it out of her tray lol

Hay in the litterbox is just a waste of hay for me. I use a curved nic grid that is attached to her cage with a zip tie right over her litterbox.

I put hay in little cardboard boxes. It tends to end up on the floor. None of mine seem to want to eat anything in their litter boxes, but I know many bunnies do.

If you are litter training I think it is a good idea because it gets them used to there litter tray and gets them to go in there… but I do it with my rabbit so I think yes!

I have a metal magazine rack that goes in a corner with 2 litter trays surrounding it. This means there is always clean hay for the boys to eat (they do tend to produce a copious amount of waste) and they are still encouraged to go into the litter trays. Not saying its mess free – they still pull it out and spread it around. They especially like to cover their own rouge incidents with it but otherwise they just wee on the entire litter tray and then point blank refuse to eat it as if someone else had weed on it!

Olivia has a big litter box and I put hay on one side of it. She was just using her hay bin as a litter box when I had them separate. Bindi is good about it so he has a separate hay bin.
