Hello, I was wondering if I should give my bunny something to chew on throughout the night? My schedule in feeding him is 7am and 7pm, then I’d leave him some hay and water around 10pm before I sleep, but he finishes it all rightaway – so that leaves him 9 hours of no food, just water. Is it okay if he doesn’t get to have some grubs for long hours? Please tell me what your routines are. Thank you so much in advance!

As far as I know rabbit should have access to unlimited fresh hay 24/7 – it is essential their digestive systems are constantly working 24/7.
So if he eats it all right away I can only think he needs it…. yes yes yes give him hay overnight.

My buns always have hay. Bunnies are grazers and should have hay at all times throughout the day. I fill it up at meal times twice a day and whenever I notice their bins getting low.

You should give him hay anytime he is out of it. There is no such thing as “too much hay.”

Thank you once again! My only problem is when I can’t wake up at midnight (especially when I’m fast asleep). By then he’d ran out of hay.

                  hi thehelm,

My bun is a big hay-eater also.
overnight I’ll let him eat from the storage box were the hay is stored, so he can literally dive in hay!

Just give him enough that he isn’t going to run out by midnight. Stuff his hay rack full.

Agree with everybunny, give him hay so it will last through the night. A bunny that eats lots of hay is a happy healthy bunny!

My bun Moshu who doesnt like hay at all, gets ONLY hay, a small portion of timothy/alfa alfa pellets and a wooden chew toy at night. I put her in her cage at night (otherwise she would hop all over our faces). I assume that rabbits do not naturally feel drowsy during night hours. I think they feel most drowsy between afternoon till night hours. I think you too might be leaving her in her condo/X-Pen at night. Since they are not sleepy and nine hours is a pretty long time, you should give her hay and chew toys during that time frame. This will keep him occupied too, since from what I know, chewing is their favorite passtime.

My bun eats the most at night when I go to sleep. By 7 am, she will be flipping her bowl and thrashing her place to wake me up to refill her bowl with hay. Before I go to bed I usually put a lot of hay for my bun to eat. They should have unlimited hay at all times

What amount are you giving each night? Do you just put it in the hay rack or the litter box? Your bun shouldn’t run out overnight, so I think whatever amount you’re giving doesn’t seem to be enough. You’re fortunate to have a good hay eater!

Beka27, I know what you mean -___- TheHelm, trust me, you are lucky your bun loves to have hay. At least, you don’t have to worry about them getting GI stasis. I miss those days when my bun happily chomped on her hay.
