Migi is a picky hay eater. She wastes a lot of Timothy so I gave up and learned she eats majority of Orchard Grass. The problem is that ever since I switched to Orchard Grass, her poop has been dark. Even though I experimented a couple days of no pellets and just hay + veggies, the poop is still dark.

Could it be the veggies causing her poop to be dark? They’re good size and not super dry. I feed her romaine lettuce + cilantro + bokchoy everyday along with unlimited hay.

Also to note, when she was on Timothy, her poop would turn dark from having too many pellets. A day or less without pellets turns it back to normal.

If the poop is big, well-formed (round) and plentiful, I wouldn’t worry too much about the color. It’s when you see a decrease in size and amount you need to start worrying, or if you get smeary poop, obviously.

It’s better that she has a hay that she eats a good amount of than timothy hay that she doesn’t eat, of course. Timothy hay is not absolutely essential for a bunny’s well-being even if it’s often recommended. There are other types of grasses that are equally fine.

Dark poop can sometimes be a sign that a bunny isn’t drinking enough. Whenever a rabbit is eating more hay, they need more water to keep their gut hydrated – so it could be that, with the change of hay into one she likes, Migi has been eating more hay but hasn’t realized she needs to drink a bit more to keep up with it.

I wouldn’t be too worried until, as bam says, the poop gets smaller, smeary, irregularly shaped or there’s less of it.

My rabbit has had darker poops before, I think it’s because they have to much calcium in there diet! I used to feed 1/4. Pellets then I switched to 1/8 and. Also because the pellets I dead had tons more calcium then oxbow! I switched over and it was a lifesaver! Also I’m allergic to dusty Timothy’s except a few but I have tried orchard grass and it was fine for me! Maybe switch gradually on the hay, cause she could just eat a lot of orchard and it could hurt her tummy! So maybe reduce the pellets plenty of water and switch the hay gradually!
