        Hi Everyone!

I recently got a new bunny from the pound! We’ve had him for about 2 months and they think he’s about 11 months old.

We had him neutered last month and had no problems at all. A couple weeks ago I noticed him scratching at his throat a LOT. He has a bit of a mane around his neck and some of it was a little matted down around his chin. I didn’t think much of it and didn’t see him scratching it after that.

Yesterday he stretched up and I noticed a sore under his neck so I guess the poor little guy has been going at it while we weren’t home. It doesn’t seem to be giving him any pain unless you touch the spot directly.

I took him to a vet yesterday and we were given pain meds and some antibiotics in case we notice any signs of infection. I’m sort of disappointed in the vet care we received. He had no idea what it would be so I’m just as clueless as before. His only idea was to keep him from licking it so that it can heal. He said we can try to put some aloe and that ‘it probably wouldn’t hurt him’. I have him at work with me today, but I feel like this is not a good enough solution.

Has anyone had this with their bunny? Any ideas how I can stop him from licking it??

Any chance he could have mites or fleas? Those are the usual causes of intense scratching.

I wouldn’t put aloe. I seem to recall reading somewhere it wasn’t good for bunnies to ingest.

You might have to put a cone on the poor guy until the cause of the itching is figured out. I also suggest clipping the fur around the wound, if you haven’t already. Wish I could be more helpful.

My cat sometimes does this. For her it’s due to allergies. I know someone else’s cat who also did that. In that case it was due to thyroid issues. Yet another cat (yes, I know a lot of cats!), does it when he’s shedding as the fur there is very thick (he’s a long hair), so it’s irritating if not brushed right away.

These are cats, but as you can see this could be anything. Same symptom – many causes. Is there another vet who could give a second opinion? That vet’s response doesn’t seem very helpful, and the examination seems less than thorough. I would be disappointed too.

I agree about not putting aloe – your bunny is sure to eat it. If he is long haired, maybe you should just regularly clip the area, as LPT suggested. Many long haired animals are more comfortable when clipped. Thick, dense fur can cause a lack of air circulation near the skin which is itchy.

I’ve read that its safe for rabbits to ingest a small amount of vaseline (sometimes recommended for Angora rabbits during moult)… or another oil (like vegetable). This will help soothe the skin to reduce continued scratching..

Definitely clip any mattes out though – and it will help you to see any injuries if you reduce the amount of hair in the area.
