I know I haven’t posted in a while due to moving but…I need a bit of help.

I still live with my father as I’m finishing my last year of high school. Due to some money issues, we have ended up in his girlfriend’s house. Those of you who have read from me know my two buns love to run free and have fun but…
My dad’s gf has her priority on her dogs. They can run, play, roam, pretty much rule the house. But my buns can’t cause of “oh well the carpet” despite her dogs running in the mud and coming inside rolling around on said special carpet.

So, for the last week, my rabbits have been bound to my room in their cages. It hurts me. They are very routine, used to me coming home and letting them play. Now I come home and just pet them from inside their cages as long as I can… I can see the sad looks that they have mastered so well. I can see the confusion in their faces. I know more than anything it isn’t fair to them. With all this, there was the promise of getting a small area set up outside. Two problems with that. The summer heat is unbearable to a human, let alone a rabbit, and it’s so unsafe with the cats and other animals roaming the neighborhood.
More than anything, I want to get a job a right now and possibly get a small studio apartment for me and my buns… but that can take many months….

My rabbits are the world to me. I honestly wouldn’t be here today without them. It’s like a mother and a child. You wouldn’t leave your children cooped up in a cage while you roamed, so why do it to pets? So now…. the big question that is truly killing me…

Should I just start looking for them a better home where someone can take better care of them? This question has plagued me for a few days now, and has brought me to tears many times. If I keep them, I’m just hurting them, leaving them to rot in their cages til I can move. If I find them a better home, it’ll surely hurt me beyond words but at least they would be happy…. and if I should find them a better home, where to turn? I certainly won’t leave them at any shelters. My boy may get adopted but not too many would like my female as she’s quite moody. I don’t know anyone who takes in rabbits or anything.

It hurts to type this but…I know that I should focus on what’s in their best interest.

Can you discuss this with your Dad’s girlfriend? Perhaps if you save up and buy a piece of lino that can cover your room she would not mind you letting them out in your bedroom?

do your best to protect anything of the house in that room that the bunnies could chew/destroy. Perhaps if you were to put in some effort and show that you respect her home she might be more willing to allow them more freedom?

May I first say that I think you are an amazing bunny owner, who really cares about what is best for your buns. They are truly very lucky to have you.

I think maybe you should have a heart-to-heart discussion with your Dad’s girlfriend, tell her your concerns, ect. Like Mimsy said, maybe you could buy some cheap lino., carpet, those foam puzzle squares for kids, fleece ect. to keep the floor safe. Plus block off anything they could chew like a dresser, table, bed (even if you know they won’t, it might give her some peace of mind).

How big are their enclosures? Maybe you could build them a bigger one while you wait to get an apartment?

Just trying to throw some ideas out there! Good luck and (((Vibes+Hugs)))

Is the room large enough for an x pen with some flooring ? Health wise that would be a temporary solution until you have your own space.

I too commend you selflessness in thinking about their welfare at the expense of your own emotional pain. That is the sign of a very mature caring person !

I think you should keep your bunnies. You obviously love them and are taking as best care of them as you can. If you were to give them away, you never know where they might end up in the long run.

Honestly, I feel bad about the situation with my buns as well. They are unbonded and in their condos most of the day. They each come out for a couple of hours most days. I wish they could be free roam. BUT I know that they still have it much better than so many buns. And they will always be safe and receive the best of care with me.

What about buying some vinyl floor (you can get end pieces cheap at flooring stores) and setting up an xpen or some condo cubes and making a play area?

Sorry for the late reply and thank you for the kind words

I have tried discussing everything with her but everything is “welll…. (insert stupid excuse that makes absolutely no sense). I was able to get them in the backyard today as I was doing their cages, but since I’m practically a house maid now, I only got to get them out for about 20 minutes each, and even then it was quite stressful making sure they were safe and not trying to run away, and stressful on them with the dogs barking at them non stop. I guess this truly is the best I can do for them until I can get my own place. I just hope I can keep them happy. They deserve so much better

They may deserve more space yes, but we all know that if it was in your power they would have it. As for deserving an owner who loves them, I don’t think they can do any better than you. I hope this works out for all of you.
