Alright so this is going to be a LONG post but please bear with me because the internet has scared me…

Philomena was recently hospitalized for an obstruction of the cecum (about a week almost two weeks ago). Shes been fine sine they sedated her and manually broke up the obstruction. She was on Meloxicam and Cisapride. She has stopped those medications Wednesday. Her diet has been mostly hay (tim and orchard) with kale, parsley and cilantro. I haven’t been giving pellets or treats as of late because I cannot afford another $1000 vet bill as of right now. I’m letting her body have extra fiber and goodness for a while so she can fully recover.

This is where I’m starting to get worried… Philomena has been drinking A LOT! Like two bowl full a day. She has also been peeing it all out. Her urine is clear and thin with no calcium residue left over. When I say she’s peeing a lot I mean that she has peed 5 times in the span of 20 minutes. She will pee while drinking… She has also been partially incontinent. She has also been a bottomless pit. She has been eating hay like no ones business. I haven’t limited her hay intake at all.

I looked up her symptoms and they are calling polyuria and polydipsia. It can be caused by many things (drugs, diabetes, kidney failure, ect.) I looked up diabetes and it says that it can be accompanied by excessive hunger.

I think she may just be bored drinking or its still just a side effect from her meds. I’m really not in a position to take her to the vet again to run more expensive tests. The internet is scaring me telling me things that could be wrong when actually this could be normal. It would mean a lot if you guys could just tell me that I may be overreacting.

If this behavior lasts for 2 weeks I’ll take her to the vet. But for now I just need someone to tell me that this could be a normal reaction to her meds or shes just bored.

If it’s diabetes, she’d be losing weight like crazy. The body consumes its own fat and muscle deposits as a result of the lack of insulin.
As you say it can be many things, ranging from sth trivial to something serious. It doesn’t have to be diabetes at all.

I can understand the internet scaring you part. Internet and binky bunny forums have been my savior, but at times internet has made my stress go haywire. The more I read, the more possibilities I create in my head.

Peeing 5 times in 20 minutes is quite a lot .But since she’s having hay like crazy (I wish my bun would do that too. Our issue is that my bun doesnt like to have hay at all). The more she eats hay, the more thirsty she is going to be. If you can just call your vet and ask them about it, just call, so that they dont make a bill out of it. See if they tell anything.

Dont think about diabetes as of yet. From what I have read about diabetes in rabbits, it is very rare.

Thank you guys. I really needed to hear somebody tell me that things are going to be ok. Philomena has since slowed down on drinking so much so I think it probably was just bored drinking and/or a side effect of meds and increased hay intake. I’m really thankful for all of you for giving me peace of mind when it comes to my bunny. ^_^

When my bun had runny cecotropes and was only on hay she used to drink like A LOT of water and obviously she peed a lot. Just keep an eye on her.

Dont you worry about that. I can assure you that I have been one of those users here who have posted her grievances more than anyone have. Most of them are related to the fact that we lack adequate bunny supplies here. Please do share whatever you feel like. It feels comforting to comfort a fellow bunny parent.

I totally agree with Avantika, when you’re worried about your bunny, it’s good to have other bunny-owners to talk to. I’m glad Philomena drinks less now =)
