Ok so Boonie LOVES those oxbow papaya plus pills and demands one each day, but I just read something saying “do not give them daily”
        So omg is this bad?
        What do I do?
I don’t wanna just stop giving them to her, that might hurt her tummy. Or would it not?
        I don’t know, have I screwed up?

My friend just recently bought them and I had a look at them too. They say on package to offer 1-2 tablets daily. If it was dangerous, they wouldn’t advise so…. I wouldn’t be worried.

Well it does say that, but then I don’t know what to believe. Sometimes products aren’t as good as they say they are

              I agree… it’s hit or miss but I wouldn’t be very paranoid about it…..

Those tablets have one of the fastest acting sugars on the planet, or at least it used to contain dextrose. They discontinued them here, I wasn’t aware they were still making them. BB was addicted to having one each morning also. I switched to banana chips and now a cookie instead as dried fruit contains twice the sugar of natural.

                  Boonie’s definitely addicted to them.
they did discontinue them here too, but i stocked up because she loves them.

I recall running around like a crazy person looking for those as the ones in the vitamin store are much higher dose.

Surprisingly he didn’t seem to care what the treat was as long as he had one. I do recall though I’d open the door to his cage and he’d race to that tablet and search for it in a frenzy, that would be the sugar, lol.

Hmm so if it’s the sugar theyre addicted to, then I wonder if the tablets are even doing anything for her?

Do u think I should ween her of them?

                        Would that upset her tummy?

You could try fresh papaya ? Though I personally think the stuff smells funky..I put it in cookies.

You could alternate days of differing treats so it’s not sudden. I think the adjustment will be more the sugar reduction than the papaya.

Papaya is, according to many vets, an old wive’s tail. There is really no proof that it does anything helpful for digestion.

I would just get bunny something else to get addicted to. Oxbow makes a great line of crunchy, cookie-type treats (check them out in the BB store). My buns are total cookie monsters for those. I give them every day.

When he still received them, Coco used to love these papaya tablets but I would only give him 1 a week as too many are very unhealthy. These tablets have a high amount of sugar which could lead to even diabetes. You are lucky that you can still buy them as here in California, they don’t make them anymore. Instead, we have Oxbow Natural Science Digestive Support tablets. Coco eats them but doesn’t enjoy them as much as he did with the papaya tablets.

Gee I’ve noticed lately that Australia really has poor nutritional options for rabbits. I don’t know if it’s got something to do with the fact they’re an introduced pest animal but it’s just crap
I’ve had to change everything in her diet because I trusted it all to be good for her at first and it’s all lumped with sugar.
So everything I get for her now is imported.

Her original diet must of been sugar, sugar, sugar and a little hay.

                                  Sorry little bit of rant.

Well I’ll have to get her off these now too
                                  My poor little girl

Oh my… I had no idea that food and treats they sell for rabbits can actually hurt them…. where is all responsibility then? Do people not care about animals at all? Why do they sell them? ….. how much sugar should rabbit eat?

No more than they would find in their natural diet.

They add it to improve the taste of their product, its easier to manufacture and in the case of molasses it increases the nutrients in a lesser quality hay.

I bought the oxbow treats which had both molasses and dried fruit in it. Dried fruit has double the amount of sugar as non dried. This is why I began making my own cookies. I’m still searching for a pellet devoid of sugars and oils.

I use those, because they made Pippin eat this in shop he was, and after I got him, he won’t eat any other. I think these are good but I am not an expert. They do them for adults too.

I use Burgess Junior Mint Pallets :

I wish i could make my own cookies, I’m a bit disasterous in the kitchen lol

Currently I’m weening Boonie of these papaya treats, I’ve cut some in half, so I’m just giving her half a tablet a day for a few days then I’ll just use them as treats in the future
I hope she gets over it quickly and doesn’t get angry with me

@kitty: those pellets sound good to me, I think the most important think is crude fibre. I’ve read it should be around 18%
I’m not sure what the original ones I had Boonie on had in them, apparently the better brands are the ones that do list what’s in them. So I can Imagine the first ones had very little fibre

Now I’ve tried a few different ones and I’m currently moving her over to Oxbow pellets. They seem good too. And reasonably priced

There are a few recipes online that use pellets as a base, with banana, carrot and oat I think ?

I use ground oat groats, ground hulled barley, ground timothy and pureed green vegetable, fruit and herbs.

Once you see your bunny eats them it makes all the kitchen work worthwhile I’m certain you could do it !

I have never seen those Oxbow pallets here in UK…. I never had any chance to choose for him, I got this mixed pallets the other day with little fruits and everything has different colour you can even buy them so you tell them how much you want and they will get them from huge box with spoon for you… but he didn’t even touch them. Not even a little nibble …. picky !!
Crude fiber, hmmm that’s good to know, I have no idea what to look at. Now I know after this chat, not to buy him anything with high sugar.

I wish you could post video here BunLuv it would be so much easier to see how you make them, to just repeat it
