We are getting our rabbit neutered on Monday.  What can I expect as far as any change to behavior.  Want to make sure I don’t over react to any small nuances.

Some rabbits experience what’s called a “post-neuter craze” after a few days/a week after the surgery. Not all bunnies go through this, but a significant enough number. It means that any adverse hormonal behvior gets a lot worse than it was before the neuter. Incl aggression, territoriality, pee- and-poop-marking, humping, grunting, etc. This generally subsides after 2 weeks but the hormones are not quite gone from the system until after 6 weeks.

If you’re planning to let him hang out with a girl bunny, remember he will have viable sperm for about 4 weeks after the neuter.

Other than that, normal after surgery is of course a bit of lethargy after the anaestethic, he may feel cold and need a hot water bottle (but let him have enough space to move away from the heat source in case he wants to), you should serve him water in a bowl because a bottle may seem bothersome for him, you should entice him with delicious food so he starts eating, they don’t always feel very inclined to eat after surgery but rabbits must never get empty tummies. He shouldn’t jump or climb for like 2 days, you should inspect the incision-area daily. Don’t fast him before the surgery, rabbits shouldn’t fast, they can’t vomit so that’s not a problem during surgery.

I can’t think of anything else right now. But do ask more if you think of anything!

After Loki was neutered, I was very surprised to see how quickly he shot back into his normal self. I was worried that he would be groggy or in pain after. Within a day or two, Loki wanted out of his cage and was ready to run. Definitely after a couple weeks he hit a peak and he was SO bad with his behavior. I mean it was everything x10, digging, grunting, chewing.. but my bunny is also kind of just like that, he’s a bit of a wild bun. It’s been about 7 months now and he’s toned down a bit, but still loves to dig and chew from time to time. but like I said, he’s like that! So it really depends on the bun

When Lloyd (my girl) was fixed she was very sluggish for a couple of days then went into a stress molt… After she was fine but she was a bit put out with me….All in all she has recovered nicely (she was spayed in July) Our boy Ninja though still had raging hormones but he has since calmed way down. He was over the top for about 2 weeks then we were able to start the bonding. Now both buns are super chill and loving life!!!

I know this is a little late but the night after neutering was so scary for me. I recently got my bun neutered over a month ago and the first night all he did was sleep and not take his meds. He mad me worry so much about him because he started to eat less. After that first hump though everything was fine. He still acts like himself but he is a bit more destructive than he was before the surgery. it could be because of other things besides the surgery but that is all I have noticed.
