My bunny was spayed this morning and has now been home for about three hours. She has started to nibble on very small amounts of hay. I have also given her a few bites of apple, and she has eaten a small piece of banana. She refuses water when it’s offered to her in a bowl or bottle.

I am happy that she has started eating, but am worried that she may stop eating later on. How do I know when it’s the right time to start feeding her Critical Care? Should I also be syringe feeding her water?

        Any advice would be appreciated!

I fed mine small frequent pieces of wet greens post spay, to get water and fibre into them. They took them quite well. It is very important to keep her warm!

It’s normal for her appetite to be diminished the first day or so after the spay. That she’s already eating on her own is great. I think you start to syringe-feed CC if there’s been no eating the morning after the spay/neuter. One of my boys didn’t eat so I started syringe-feeding the morning after.
She may have gotten fluids in conjunction with the op, so she is well hydrated and doesn’t need to drink for a while.
Keep offering her her favorites, as JG says, wet greens are good for fiber and fluid and if you offer a little bit of them often, she’s likely to be more interested than if you serve a big pile all at once.
If you decide to syringe Cc later you can make it extra runny so she gets extra water with it.

Thanks for the input! We offered her greens but she rejected them for a while. She has since had half a romaine leaf. Will keep trying!

                Thanks bam!

She has eaten some fruit and half a romaine leaf. She’s also had more sips of water. It’s now the day after and she hasn’t touched any pellets offered. She’s been eating more hay though so we feel much more relaxed about it
