THIS INFORMATION IS GIVEN CREDIT TO BunSpace.com:

September 15, 2015: Rabbit Advocacy Network, House Rabbit Society, and SaveABunny, on behalf of tens of thousands of house rabbit lovers, are thrilled to announce the end of rabbit meat sales at Whole Foods Market (WFM).

Whole Foods Market’s sale of rabbit meat began in Summer 2014 as a pilot program and drew widespread criticism from pet lovers across the nation, attracting dozens of protests at their stores as well as a petition signed by over 50,000 people.

A House Rabbit Society member and long-time Whole Foods shareholder traveled 800 miles to attend the annual Whole Foods Market Shareholders Meeting in Charlotte, NC today to speak on behalf of the bunnies being killed for the grocery chain’s meat case.  She does not consider herself an activist, but felt strongly that the shareholders meeting would be an integral outlet to bring up her concerns as both an investor in the company as well as a lover of pets. After her heartfelt plea to the Whole Foods leadership team, she was told by Whole Foods’ Chief Operating Officer, A.C. Gallo, that Whole Foods had decided to cease the sales of all rabbits by the end of 2015.

According to the 2012 American Pet Products Association (APPA) Pet Owners Survey, 2.5 million households now live with rabbits, who are now the nation’s third most popular (behind cats and dogs) furry pet. Their 2009-2010 survey found that 6,678,000 rabbits were kept as pets in the United States in 2010, and that number continues to increase.

Margo DeMello, President of House Rabbit Society, had this to say about Whole Foods’ decision: “We could not be more excited that Whole Foods has decided to listen to their customers, and pet lovers across the country, and ended their sale of rabbit meat. We thank Whole Foods for putting pets before profits. We hope that other grocery chains will follow in Whole Foods’ footsteps, and make a similar decision: that rabbits, or any pets, are not a viable meat.”

Tara Baxter of Rabbit Advocacy Network commented, “We are extremely grateful that a monumental amount of rabbit lives will be saved moving forward.  We hope that other grocery chains will follow suit so that the cruelty inherent in rabbit farming will cease forever. The undercover investigation done by Last Chance for Animals of the Pel-Freez rabbit farm proves that there is no humane way to farm and kill a bunny and that these animals suffer immensely when they should be treated like the beloved companion animals they are.”

It’s pretty great when a campaign is successful like this.

I was very glad when I saw all the Facebook posts about this yesterday. I often send protest emails to companies regarding various causes, so it’s good to know that protesting and putting pressure on companies can really work. It would be so great if all grocery stores would follow suit, and if restaurants would take rabbit dishes off of their menus.

Rabbit is not a traditional Swedish dish but there’s actually been som campaigns FOR rabbit-meat since it’s environmentally friendly. I hope it won’t catch on. I can very well see how, in principle, it’s no worse than eating other animals, but to me a rabbit is no more food than a dog is.

More environmentally-friendly because rabbits eat grass? I guess I could see that. What is it, 6lbs of grain to create 1lb of beef? It was something we talked about in environmental studies. It’s an interesting topic.

From a BB standpoint, this topic isn’t far away from what would be considered against the rules (e.g. discussion of meat rabbits). I think we’re okay continuing to discuss this as long as everyone is being respectful of one another. So far, it looks like everyone is.

I was a part of RAN – Rabbit Advocacy Network – and was on board with the first campaigns last summer!

Most of us were not campaigining b/c we think rabbits are “better” than other animals. We were campaigning 1) b/c rabbits are the 3rd most common pets in the US and 2) b/c this is one more “fad” beginning to take the US. As a self-professed foodie, I have noticed it popping up on more & more menus across the US. My biggest complaint against Whole Foods and rabbit meat was they were claiming the rabbits were being raised humanely which was completely false as from the very beginning they were stating that the rabbits were receiving a CORN based diet. Like WHAT?! Not only that but an advocacy group did a study into the “humane” killing of rabbits and came to the conclusion that when getting rabbits for meat — there is no HUMANE way to do so. Rabbits are also one of those animals that are not covered by ANY laws. They do not fall under livestock laws and there are no laws stating that there are ANY standards on adequate rabbit care when it comes to raising them humanely. This means most are probably not stunned before slaughter and even the ones that are stunned — their methods of stunning do not work on any rabbit over 2.2 lbs!

It’s not JUST about the “rabbits are pets”! It goes so much deeper than that! I’m glad to see everyone on BB supporting this win! A lot of people in the rabbit groups have pushed back with negative comments and pretty harsh ones at that!

I’m a vegetarian so in my heart I wish that all animals would be pulled off the grocery store shelves but I know that will never happen in my lifetime. I am extremely happy to hear this.  I was once in a supermarket and saw some rabbit in the freezer and it just broke my heart. All I could think of was my little buns at home.

And having met several rescued “meat” bunnies, they are the sweetest little things.

So BINKY BINKY BINKY for this!!!!

PLEASE READ: As BB FL, I feel required to mention that everyone has their own opinions. Let’s keep this thread friendly please.

Thanks for letting me know. I didn’t want this topic to disgust others nor did I want to break Binky Bunny’s rules. I actually wanted to inform others. But if this topic goes to far out of waste, you are welcome to lock it. I would appreciate your consideration and discipline if you so choose to. But it’s best for others, I had shown this as more happy news and that the House Rabbit Society has done such an amazing job with our community. But please do what’s best for the community, let me know if this post discriminates some people.
