I’ve had my male rabbit now for about 8 months, he’s about 10 months old. He’s always been very shy and timid but happy doing his own thing. Last weekend we bought another male, he’s 8 weeks old and the complete opposite, he’s adventurous, outgoing and pretty crazy! Not knowing much about bonding I just kind of supervised them for the first meeting, and they both seem very happy. The older male has mounted the younger one a few times but stops as soon as I approach them. They had one tiny scuffle thankfully with no damage to either. They seem happy spending time together, lay down together and hop in and out of each other’s cages (they stay seperate when they are unsupervised). After reading so much now about bunny bonding I’m wondering if I’ve just ended up with two perfect bunnies, or if the worst in on it’s way. Can bunnies just automatically take to each other or have I doomed them from the start?! Thanks!

My two were instant friends, but they are both neutered. Is your older bun neutered? You might have some issues as your younger bun matures, especially if the older one isn’t neutered either. Its usually recommended not to introduce buns until they are both neutered but since you already have I would maybe keep letting them spend time together until they are both neutered but keep it supervised until after the healing time after surgery.

It is possible to have an instant bond, I did and I posted here about it because I thought it was odd, like you I had read everything about how hard it is usually and others on here said they had instant bonds too so it does happen.

Nice to know someone else had so much luck! Neither of mine are neutered, and surprisingly don’t seem very territorial! Suppose I’ll just keep my fingers crossed and hope it lasts!

I know it is MUCH easier when you have younger rabbits to bond them.  Takes almost no time at all.

Both of mine were adults when they met, I got extremely lucky! I would absolutely get them neutered, I highly doubt a bond would survive between two unneutered males once they are both mature, there is almost certainly going to be fighting/spraying/poop wars between unneutered pairs. Also are you absolutely sure your new bun is a boy? Its very difficult to tell in young rabbits and if you have a female you will end up with an oops litter.

We had him triple checked when we bought him as we didn’t want any accidents! Will probably end up having them both neutered sooner or later, just wondered what the chances were that they’d stay friends! I have noticed quite a bit of territorial pooping and one or twosprays, but thankfully no fighting yet…
