Hi! recently i just made a huge 2 floor age for my rabbit because she had a way too small one before when i just got her. She has been chewing and rattling the bars on her cage mostly only SUPER early in the morning, keeping me up all night! I’ve been doing some research and most websites say to make her a bigger cage or add more toys and things for her to do that aren’t as noisy, which i have tried, I might be moving her out of my room once we have renovated, and that wont be maybe for a couple years! So what can i do until then? I was thinking i could put vinegar on her cage bars, but i’m not sure if it is okay for her to digest a little bit and if it will work. PLEASE HELP

I make sure to let her out for a nice long time to play outside of her cage before bed, which i do find helps a bit, but she still does it every time! I can not let her out 3 in the morning, or let her roam my room all night because she will use my bed as her litterbox!

hmmm…I wish I could offer some suggestions but other than give her a cardboard box to play with and chew on (if you haven’t already) although that may make too much noise if she is in your room.

Is she spayed? Just wondering since that may help the bed as a litterbox issue if she’s not.

Can you put cardboard over the area to discourage her? Yes, as LPT said, it may be noisy as well if she starts chewing it, but if there’s something to cover the bars with???… I don’t think vinegar would be a problem, though I have heard some buns like the taste…ew! Some people have luck spraying perfume to discourage chewing, but too much spray worries me with the scent spreading throughout the room and that might be bad for her to breathe too much of. Let us know how you make out. Maybe she will simply tire of not getting anywhere with trying to bully her way through the bars

No matter how much play time my bun gets out of her cage she still rattles her cage whenever she sees or hears me so its normal that she’s doing it. It has gotten a little better since shes been spayed. Chewy toys are a good idea but they can be noisy. My bun really likes those Timothy compressed hay cubes so maybe try that.

                Hi,

I know this is a little gross, but my bunny would always rattle the bars in his pen when he’d marked urine on it. He was attracted to the smell etc, so she might be marking her territory. Maybe rub a scent on it that won’t harm your bunny but will put her off chewing the bars, maybe a ‘fly strike’ spray. I use an ecoorganic friendly one and my bunny hates the scent but I know it isn’t harmful for him if he was to lick it etc.

                Hope it helps. x

Thank you so much everyone for your help i will definitely try all those things, and yes i try changin up her toys every night and she always has a cardboard hidey house in her cage…. Im not sure if i should have done this but a couple nights ago i put a little hot sauce on my fingers and rubbed my fingers all over the cage bars mostly to get the scent and some of the taste of there, and it helped!! But i think ill try something else because it still hasnt totally fixed the problem

                  She is also not spayed….
( she is 5months old) and i hope to get her spayed but my parents will not help me pay for the operation and i do not have enough money myself, anyways that was a whole other topic i started if u guys want to help me out with that also LOL

I noticed the bun strted to tolerate whenver i sprayed her with water, so i added a lottle bit of vinegar to the spray an if she chews the bars on the cage to much she knows i will spray her and she stops right away! The chewing has slowed down and isnt disruptive during the night, but maybe a little in the morning ( but by that time i have to get up anyway) i also rubbed some vinegar on thw cage bars. It hasnt stopped all the way but i am happy to compromise!

I would be cautious of both using hot sauce on the cage and spraying the bun with vinegar (the cage, yes but not the bun).

I’m glad you’ve managed to reduce the rattling though.

It may that spaying is the problem, so it could be difficult until you’ve managed to save up.

George rattles a reasonable amount and when she’s not rattling she’s usually throwing around her toys or ripping up cardboard.

Perhaps less desirable, but you could wear some ear plugs (personally I hate the pressure difference and prefer ear defenders but those are uncomfortable for bed). The other thing to consider is that if you try not stress about the noise too much you will eventually habituated to it in the same way that people who live next to motorways, airports and railway lines do. (Unless, like me, your ability to filter sensory information is out of whack.)
