        Hello!

We rescued a bunny 2 years ago & we usually leave her out for a while to run free around the house but under our strict supervision because she chews anything she can: baseboards, furniture, cables… We cannot leave her in the house alone without having on eye on her. We also have 2 kitties. We have a screened patio where they all love being, but they cannot use it when it’s too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer and my heart breaks reducing our bunny to a cage. So we decided to convert the screened patio into a 4 seasons room/patio where we could keep the bunny whole year round so she could have a lot of space to run and jump.

Right now I have a temporal pet door and cats and bunny know how to use it. So, in one side of the pet door there is the patio and when they pass through the pet door, in the other side I have bunny’s cage so she can get in and out anytime she wants. But, I’m really tired of that idea because cats cannot get into the house freely but they go to the cage too so I have to open and close the cage’s door all the time they want in and out of the house.

Also, since the cage is always on the way, we cannot go out to the patio so easily either.

We have in mind to let the bunny into the house sometimes to run and play around under our supervision… But the idea is having her most of the time in the big 4 seasons patio.

So, I really need ideas about how or where could I fix a pet door where the rabbit won’t be able to reach and use it, but cats yes could pass freely through it and get easily into the house and out.

        Any ideas are welcome.

        Thank you very much!

They make pet doors that require a magnetic key worn on a collar to open. If your cats wear collars they could use it.

Here are a couple of links. I have no opinions on which ones are better than others, I just googled and pick the first few as examples. If you decide to go this way, you will want to research which have good reviews yourself.

Oh, thank you so much, Eepster! I knew about that ones with the collars, but my cats don’t wear collars, so I haven’t put attention on such pet doors.

When we adopted the first kitty, she was playing and her jaw got trapped with the collar between her open mouth and teeth. I totally freaked out because the collar was the kind which is suppose to open easily and release fast in case of emergency (like if the cat got trapped by the collar in a branch) but this one, even I had trouble releasing the collar and free the kitten.

But, thanks to your idea and suggestion, I have been investigating and there are some other pet doors which opens with the existing microchip tag. I never put a microchip to our bunny just because she is more afraid of going outside than anything in the world, so I just know she will never escape.

            Big thanks again!
