My bunny(Mini Rex) has sore hocks at the back of her hind legs. I’ve attached the pics and will it heal by itself if proper care is being taken or should i take her to the vet? I’ve no idea what caused it as her area is covered with a fleece blanket as her flooring and she has a box (also covered with fleece) to jump on and jump onto the bed for her to run around. She is currently 8 months old and i have never cut her nails for her hind legs, only the front.

Do you think its caused by that

The length of her nails. Is it too long?

        ?

Not cutting the nails makes the bunny stand in a way that too much pressure is put on the heels. Therefore that probably caused the sore hocks, but the rex breed is prone to sore hocks .I suggest you cut her nails , since its your first time be very careful not to cut the quick but if you do ( hopefully not ) cornstarch will stop the bleeding. For me i suggest you get a check up with the vet.

It’s hard to say for sure with just a picture but those really don’t look that bad to me. Most bunnies normally have callouses there and like Reem said Mini-Rex’s are more prone to sore hocks because they tend to have less fur on their heels. Normal hocks are just like a hard, pink callous. Those are nothing to worry about. Vet needs to be seen if they are bleeding, inflamed, and/or red.

It’s good to check the hocks as part of your routine grooming so if there is a problem, you can catch it early and start treatment asap. Sore hocks are notoriously stubborn to heal.

Thank you. others said the same thing as well as sore hocks tend to be red  and inflamed and i guess this is a normal hocks/callous. will callous go away/return to normal itself or is it permanent?

The callous is permanent which is a good thing! You want them to allows look pink and have a somewhat firm texture as it prevents their hocks from becoming sore and inflamed. If you see their hocks become purple secreting fluid or your bunny not moving properly a vet check would be in order to clean and show you how to properly wrap the hock until the inflammation goes away.

That’s not really a sore hock – it is a callous. Sore hocks are open wounds.
