My two girls are getting spayed tomorrow. I’m so nervous! Not for the spay, but that they’ll mess with their incisions and hurt them selves afterward. They’re house seperately and will remain seperate.
So my question is for those who have had their girls spayed…. Have they messed with the incision? How common is it? Am I crazy nervous over nothing? How close do I need to supervise them?
They both hate being held, so I’m not even sure how I’m going to check them afterward. :-/
Id really like to hear some others post spay experiences.

I totally understand your nervousness, I think we’ve all been there!

As long as your going to a rabbit savvy vet, registered with the rabbit board society, your girls should be fine! I calmly lifted my girl while she was eating, leaving her butt on the floor so she didn’t get upset about being picked up. She HATES being held, and she did well with that. Only checked it once, There was no irritation or anything.

I think keeping them separate for a month while they are healing is smart. I would suggest keeping their cages immaculate for the healing and making sure the have a clean dry place to rest. Also make sure the floor of the cage isn’t slippery! Don’t worry! It will be fine

          Hope this helps!

Thank you! Also did your bun get metacam to take home? I’m going to rabbit savvy vet, he does all the spays and neuters for the local rabbit rescue, but he doesn’t usually give metacam to take home. Says he gives an injection that last 24 hours and buns usually eat better after without the extra doses. But I’m worried they’ll be in pain and it’ll cause them to mess at their site. I’m going to try to get them to send me home with some meds anyways. I’ve gotten pretty mixed experiences looking online. About half and half of buns getting it or not getting it and doing fine both ways. Idk, I’m just a nervous wreck.

Speckles was spayed exactly 7 days ago. She didn’t do much, other than being frustrated at being cooped up, because the vet recommended having her not have as much freedom, since she is a very hyperactive bun. But lots of toys have kept her sane. And love from her humans.

She shows no interest in her incision spot.

MIne were done 4 weeks ago. I lined everywhere with puppy training pads, so there was no risk of them peeing where they lay and getting it in the incision sites, which had the added advantage I could see as soon as they peed and pooped, and how much. One had no problems with the spay at all, the other struggled to keep warm, so make sure you’ve some way of dealing with either or both needing help to keep warm. From what I’ve read, that’s not an uncommon issue post anesthetic. One did initially spend time grooming the incision site, so I kept a close eye, but she did lose interest quite quickly. I did had a collar to hand just in case though!

                Good luck for both girls.

NB make sure you’ve lots of whatever leafy greens they like best, as they may need tempting to eat, and wet greens get water and fibre through them!

Thanks so much! I just dropped them off. Now waiting until 2 to call and see when they’ll be ready. They were super nervous.

None of my rabbits ever picked at their incisions. A female will need some pain medication for 2 or 3 days after a spay. Metacam is usually the medication that is given. For one of my rabbits, I was given Butorphanol. That is what was used by the shelter she came from.

Wrap your rabbits in a towel to give them medication. You might want to get someone to help – they can hold the rabbit while you put the syringe in their mouth. Insert it into the side of their mouth, in the space between their front and back teeth. I hope that your rabbits do well and recuperate quickly.

One girl did great and is already eating. The other had a compilation.
Her intestines got nicked when she was cut open. The vet repaired it, and gave me antibiotics for her. The doc said she should be fine though, but make sure she poops this weekend. :-/ also she’s already messing with her incision site. I put a cut open sock around her kid in hopes that will keep her from it. Should I get a cone?
