Hey, my rabbit boots has been battling stasjs for the last three days. When i first heard his tummy making noises I gave him a massage and then the following morning I brought him into the vet and they gave me critical care, baytril and this drug to battle the stasis and get the gut moving again. But the next day he was still acting lethargic. Wasn’t really interested in anything so I brought him back in that night and he ate for the vet. His vitals were normal and his tempature was also normal. They also heard movement in his gut. So I brought him home and he acted even more lethargic. I honestly thought he was going to die that night. But when i woke up he had eaten his food and pooped. I went ahead and gave him medicine and some dandelion leaves and he ate some then went back to acting lethargic. I don’t know what to do anymore. Is this a long process? I already am 1000 in vet bills and can’t go anymore. What do I do?

Stasis can take a while for a bunny to get over completely, but you shouldn’t need to keep going to the vet again and again, esp not since your bun has shown improvement (eaten pellets, pooped).

Do you have simethicone (baby gas drops)? If not, I’d advice you to get some. It’s OTC and not pricey and available just about everywhere I think, if you’re in the USA. In Europe, you may need to go to a pharmacy.

You can give simethicone several times a day and combine it with tummy massages. Also make sure he’s properly hydrated by syringing him water.

This is a great aritcle that you should read if you haven’t already:
          http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

You can call your vet and ask for a pain-killer, Metacam is probably the best one for cases like these. They shouldn’t charge you extra for a reciept I think. Gas/stasis is painful and may make a bunny very unmotivated. The rumbling sound in his belly indicates gas. That means he literally needs to fart. Which baby gas drops and tummy rubs will help him do.

If you get a painkiller for him, make sure he stays warm though, since all painkillers lower the body temp some. You can put a fleece blankie on him or even better, sit him on your knee.

And be persistent. Don’t give up. Keep up the CC, the tummy must never be empty. And please keep us posted.

Yes I went and bought simethicone from target and have been giving it.to him. How often would you reccomend? Should I continue to give him wet dandelion leaves and grass?

You should absolutely continue to give him wet dandelion leaves and grass. If he wants to eat that, it’s just great! You can entice him with other fresh herbs like mint too if you like. Another food-item an un-well bunny might like is canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just plain unsweetened pumpkin). It can be mixed with CC.

You can give 1-2 cc simethicone every hour for three doses, then cut down to 1 cc every 3-8 hours. I’m guessing you have the 20mg/ml strenght, that’s the most common. I have 100 mg/ml strength so I give 0,5 cc. It’s a bunny-safe med according to MediRabbit. It’s much used among bunny owners.

I know how frustrating stasis can be. I’ve been in that “my bunny is going to die” situation several times.

I don’t have any additional info for you just some (((Feel Better Vibes))) for Boots.

I got my bun back to normal by giving him a few tablespoons of pellets, soaked in enough warm water to make a porridge like mush, then I mixed in a table spoon of canned pumpkin, and a dose of simethicone, and did that three times a day. He ADORED it, and it got him eating on his own, where before he wasn’t interested. And if you can make sure that he has his absolute FAVORITE foods on hand. My rabbit didn’t want to eat the veggies I
d been feeding him, but when I went out and bought his favorite veggies, it got him to eat more. We just went through what almost turned into stasis a few weeks ago, and it was so stressful.
