So the other day I was at the chiropractor getting my treatment for a back injury I have and she put these electrode things on the muscles to loosen them up.  It sort of felt like a whole bunch of kittens purring, but from inside me.  Which got me wondering; do kittens purr in utero, and if they do what does it feel like for the pregnant mommy cat?

Hmmm. Interesting. I started to say something about putting helps the nursing process. But then the mama purrs to comfort her kittens. So I don’t know!

After a quick Google search, it is not clear. Some say its a learned behavior and others say its possible in the later stages of development.

I have asked my cats, but they don’t know either.

What an interesting question! I’m thinking they wouldn’t do it in utero, since they aren’t breathing yet at that point. There would have to be airflow, right?

I thought about that, but wasn’t sure how necessary airflow was, I thought amniotic fluid might be a possible substitute for the air.  Whales and dolphins vocalize underwater.   I’m not sure if whales use water they bring down in their lungs though, which kittens in utero couldn’t.
