My 12 year old bunny has been slowing down a lot the past few years but has remained quite healthy (with some bumps along the way) for which I’ve been very grateful.

Unfortunately he’s lost a lot of energy the last couple of days. It’s not that he doesn’t eat, but he’s not throwing himself at his bowl and constantly chewing hay like he used to. He was drinking a lot less, but once I offered him water in a bowl instead of his usual bottle he started drinking again. He’s also sleeping all the time and falls over every now and then.

It worries me that this sudden down spike in energy has happened so suddenly, but I don’t know if it’s serious enough to warrant a visit at the vet. Is this normal or should I go get it checked out?

Any sudden changes require a vet visit. My rule of thumb is if I find mys e lf wondering if I need to go to the vet then the answer is yes. If in doubt, check it out.

I’m actually going through the exact same situation as you with my 12 year old mini rex female. Took her to the vet and got a urine analysis, blood panel, and weighed her (unfortunately she’s lost more weight). So now we are waiting for the test results to see what our options are. Good luck with your old man!

At this age, a trip to the vet is a great idea. It could be his teeth – rabbits this age have many dental issues. Get him in to see the vet.

We were going to go to the vet today, but my old man died this morning in my arms.

                I’ll never forget him
